The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will announce its list of candidates for the February 20 elections to the Panchayatraj bodies in Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday, according to K. Pratapsimha Nayak, president, Dakshina Kannada unit of the party.

He said that the State unit of the party has approved the list of candidates to be fielded for the zilla and taluk panchayat elections. If there are any changes to be made, it would be finalised by Tuesday and the list would be announced.
In the 35-member Council of the zilla panchayat, the BJP has 24 members. After delimitation of constituencies for the coming elections, the number of zilla panchayat constituencies have gone up to 36.
Of five taluk panchayats in the district, the BJP, though in majority in all of them, is leading the Councils in four taluk panchayats.
In Mangaluru Taluk Panchayat, the panchayat president has been elected from the Congress and the vice-president from the BJP. It is due to reservation factors.
According to Mr. Nayak, in the elections to 227 gram panchayats conducted in the district sometime ago, BJP-backed candidates were in majority in 129 panchayats (57 per cent). Congress-backed candidates were in majority in 80 panchayats and the Janata Dal (Secular) in one panchayat.
