RANCHI: Three Congress leaders -- former union minister Subodh Kant Sahay, former minister Rajendra Singh and sitting RS MP Dhiraj Prasad Sahu (Congress) - are in the race for Rajya Sabha , elections for which will be held next month. Two seats would fall vacant in June creating the necessity for re-election. One seat is currently held by Congress and other by BJP. Congress legislative party leader Alamgir Alam said this is the turn of the Congress. "Congress's claim to the seat is natural because Congress seat is falling vacant," Alam said.
He said in past the Congress has supported both JMM and RJD during Rajya Sabha elections. "This is the time of Congress to get support," he said.

In 2015 when Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) fielded Haji Hussain Ansari for Rajya Sabha elections, Congress had backed its candidate. In 2014 when RJD fielded its leader Prem Chand Gupta for Rajya Sabha, Congress had backed him. Currently RJD does not have any MLA in Jharkhand, but Congress tries to utilize the support extended to it (RJD) to seek other opposition parties' backing.

Banking on this concept RS MP Dhiraj Prasad Sahu has already announced that he would seek re-election. He has been backed by another Congress RS MP Pradeep Kumar Balmuchu. A lobby is working to gather support in his favor.

Subodh Kant Sahay, who is working hard to gather in-house support to stake his claim for the seat, is among the frontrunners. "The party has not taken a final decision on whether to contest the election or support other party. The question of contesting the election comes after a decision is taken," Sahay said.

A leader close to Sahay, who did not want to be quoted, said Sahay is the national face of the party and has enough political clout to get the support of the opposition parties and some independent MLAs for his election provided the party decides to field him.

After a period of political inactivity former minister Rajendra Prasad Singh's political activities have increased recently indicating his desire to go to Rajya Sabha.

Congress spokesperson Lal Kishore Nath Sahdeo said the party high command would take a call on the issue very soon. "We will seek the support of JMM which is important to win the elections," he said.

Congress has seven MLAs, JMM 19 and JVM-P two. A unity among them with the support of some independent MLAs would be enough to win one RS seat.
The last date for filing the nomination for the RS elections is May 31 and the elections for two seats will be held on June 11.
