Jharkhand Municipal Poll: 8 municipal bodies go to the polls amid heavy security

More than 12.28 lakh voters will pick their representatives amid tight security for eight civic bodies in Jharkhand on Tuesday, said state election commission officials. Three municipal corporations — Dhanbad, Deoghar and Chas, three municipalities — Chakradharpur, Jhumritilaiya and Vishrampur, and two nagar panchayats — Koderma and Majhiaon - will go to polls.

Ward-39 (Ranchi), ward-9 (Adityapur), ward - 26 (Medininagar), ward-28 (Phusro) and ward-4 (Mihijam) will go to  by-elections the same day.

A total of 12,28,608 voters, including 6,76,874 males and 5,51,734 females, will exercise their franchise to elect representatives in 229 wards.

Elections will be held in 1383 booths housed in 732 buildings. In all, 2083 candidates are in the fray, including for three mayoral posts and five chairman posts.

The polling process will start from 7am and continue till 5pm. The state election commission has directed district authorities to declare Tuesday a public holiday to increase the poll percentage in scorching heat.

The weather department has advised voters to exercise their franchise in morning hours as temperature may hover around 43 degree celsius in the districts going to polls.

State election commissioner Shiv Basant said, “Preparations have been made and security arrangements are in place to ensure free and fair elections.”

The NOTA (none of the above) option has been introduced for the civic polls. “If any voter doesn’t find suitable candidate for any post, he/she could use the NOTA button,” Basant said.
