Kashmir Govt Formation: PDP's Mehbooba Mufti To Meet Jammu and Kashmir Governor on December 31

jammukashmir assembly election 2014

In an indication that its talks with the BJP on forging an alliance have suffered a setback, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will now be meeting the Jammu & Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on December 31 instead of January 1 as fixed earlier to discuss its plan on government formation in the state.

“The meeting of Mehbooba Mufti with the Jammu and Kashmir Governor has been preponed to Wednesday’’ said an official spokesperson here.

However, the meeting between BJP leaders and the Governor will take place as per schedule on January 1. BJP state president Jugal Kishore Sharma, who is also the MP from Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha constituency, is scheduled to meet the Governor at Raj Bhavan at 11.30 am.

A source in the PDP said: “The PDP in a formal communication to the Governor expressed unwillingness to meet him the day BJP leaders were also invited.’’

The bitterness between the two parties, especially when PDP had started warming upto BJP for government formation, followed cancellation of meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, which was reportedly fixed for Monday.

BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav had during his recent visit to Srinagar had agreed on Mufti’s one-to-one meeting with Modi for finalisation of the terms of alliance between two parties, the source said.

Mufti was scheduled to fly to Delhi on Monday, but on Sunday evening, BJP told PDP that Modi was pre-occupied and so he should meet BJP president Amit Shah for discussing the details of an alliance.

In the 87-member Assembly, PDP has 28 MLAs, closely followed by BJP (25), National Conference (15), Congress (12) and others (7).

While Congress has formally offered its support to PDP, National Conference too has verbally conveyed its support to it so as to stall BJP’s move to come to power in the state for the first time. As per provisions of the Constitution, the new government shall be formed by January 19, otherwise Governor’s rule will have to be imposed in the state.

From London, on twitter, Omar takes swipe at PDP-BJP talks

Outgoing chief minister Omar Abdullah Monday took jibes at talks between political parties in a bid to find allies. “And now it’s a PDP, NC and Congress grand alliance! Serious proposal or more mind games to give the BJP decision makers sleepless nights?’’ he tweeted from London. Earlier quoting PDP spokesperson suggestion for “a PDP, BJP and Congress grand alliance’’, he wrote: “All coming together against NC? We feel very important’’.

Referring to the political situation in the state, he, in reply to the tweet from a follower, wrote: “New era of good governance, transparency and openness or is it just that now I don’t have to explain myself to anyone”.

In an apparent reference to PM Narendra Modi’s appeals to electorate at his rallies for ending the dynasty rule of two families — Abdullahs and Muftis— he took a jibe at BJP’s attempts to woo PDP and even NC for the government formation. “Soon forgot :-) A BJP hoarding stands tall in Sopore promising an end to dynasty rule of two families,’’ he wrote re-tweeting a tweet earlier posted by a BJP candidate.
