J&K Assembly Elections 2014 – Bharatiya Janata Party or People’s Democratic Party: Who will emerge victorious?

The four-cornered battle for 87 seats of Jammu and Kashmir assembly has begun. However there are four major parties; National Conference, Congress, People’s Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But the real contest is between BJP and PDP as the ruling NC and Congress has lost ground after Narendra Modi-led BJP registered decisive victory in Lok Sabha and other state assembly elections.

When we look at the results of last Assembly Election in Jammu and Kashmir that was held in December 2008, NC emerged as largest party winning 28 seats out of 87 assembly seats. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was on second place with 21 seats while the Congress got third spot winning 17 seats. The BJP could only win 11 seats. NC formed government with the support of Congress in the state and Omar Abdullah became the state’s youngest ever Chief Minister at 38.

But the political equation has drastically changed after general elections. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, out of the six parliamentary constituencies, the BJP won on three seats while the remaining seats were won by PDP. NC and Congress that won 3 and 2 seats respectively in 2009 Lok Sabha Elections could not retain a single seat. We look at where the four major parties stand in the contest.

National Conference:

The biggest challenge for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah led-NC facing is that many senior leaders like Mehboob Beg and Sheikh Ghulam Rasool have deserted the party just ahead of assembly elections. However, Omar is confident that his party would win the assembly elections but he is going miss the presence of his father Farooq Abdullah due to his health issues.

Bharatiya Janata Party:

Riding on Narendra Modi’s wave, the BJP is spreading its wings facr across the country. BJP president Amit Shah’s management skills have proved a bitter pill for the opponents in Lok Sabha elections and the states elections in Maharashtra and Haryana. Before the dates of assembly elections were announced, Amit Shah has severely criticised the ruling parties that clearly indicated that the BJP would not leave any stone unturned to get victory in Jammu and Kashmir. The real test for the BJP will be in Kashmir as the party never won a seat in the valley which is dominated by Muslim community. The BJP has strong base in Jammu and Ladakh region which compromises of 41 seats (Jammu-37, Ladakh-4) of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. The magical number is 44. If the BJP wins on all seats in Jammu and Ladakh then too it will be needing support from Valley. The BJP is going to the electorate with Modi’s slogan ‘Sab Ka Saath, Sab Ka Vikas’ and it remains to be seen if the Valley is impressed by his developmental agenda or not.

People’s Democratic Party:

With NC and Congress losing ground, PDP has real opportunity to get power in Kashmir region as the party enjoys good support from Valley. After opinion polls prediction that the PDP would emerge as largest party, the party would try its best to make the prediction true. The PDP is hoping to wrest power riding on people’s resentment and anger against the NC government.

Congress:

However, Congress has nothing to lose as it has understood that people have lost faith in the party. Congress-led by Ghulam Nabi Azad in Jammu and Kashmir is criticizing its former align NC for the current situation of Kashmir. It shows that Congress hasn’t learnt anything from its recent defeats. Ideally, Congress should have aligned with PDP as both parties have shared power in the past when Azad and Mufti Sayeed became CMs of Jammau and Kashmir under a rotational agreement.

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections are scheduled to be held on November 25. Let us see what the people of Jammu and Kashmir decide.
