Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections 2014: know about the poll-battle of the valley
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections are scheduled to be held on November 25. The election will be held in five phases. The model code of conduct has come into the effect. The results will be declared on December 23. The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is comprised of 87 seats. the term of the 87-member Jammu and Kashmir assembly ends on January 19. The ruling National Conference (NC) and Congress will have a tough contest from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following the anti-incumbency across the country. We bring to you the detail analysis of the political situation of the valley.
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Election Results 2008: When we look at the results of last Assembly Election in Jammu and Kashmir that was held in December 2008, National Conference (NC) emerged as largest party winning 28 seats out of 87 assembly seats. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was on second place with 21 seats while the Congress got third spot winning 17 seats. The BJP could only win 11 seats. Though NC became the largest party but failed to achieve the majority mark of 44 seats. With the support of Congress, NC formed government in the state and Omar Abdullah became the state’s youngest ever Chief Minister at 38.
Lok Sabha Election Results 2014: But the scenario drastically changed in 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. Out of the six parliamentary constituencies, the BJP won on three seats while the remaining seats were won by PDP. NC and Congress that won 3 and 2 seats respectively in 2009 Lok Sabha Elections could not retain a single seat.

Now it will be a fight between BJP that is riding on Narendra Modi wave, is extremely confident after winning general elections and Haryana and Maharashtra Assembly Election and ruling NC-Congress alliance. Before the dates were announced, BJP president Amit Shah severely criticised the ruling parties that clearly indicated that the BJP would not leave any stone unturned to get victory in Jammu and Kashmir. While the Congress has nothing to lose as it would have understood that it has failed to get back the trust of people. For NC, killings of youth by security forces, unemployment and the sentimental issue of hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru would be the issue on which it will contest the elections. The PDP would be hoping to wrest power riding on people’s resentment and anger against the NC government. Let see what the people of Jammu and Kashmir decides.
