The Uttar Pradesh police has stopped BJP MLA Sangeet Som’s rally outside Kairana. Som complied with police, saying the party workers would not do anything to affect law and order. Section 144 – prohibition on assembly of more than 10 persons in an area – had earlier been imposed in Kairana.

Despite the local administration’s decision to disallow the rally, Som had said he would carry out the Nirbhay Yatra in Kairana.

The rally, starting from Meerut, had been announced in light of the BJP MP Hukum Singh’s report on the alleged ‘Kairana exodus.’
Singh, however, maintained that such a rally should not be held as it will only spark communal tensions.
Som said the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh is abysmal, and the people of the state should feel that they are safe.Som said his party had not asked him to discontinue the rally and that he would carry out the rally in a peaceful manner and within the ambit of the law.
BJP President in UP, Keshav Morya however said that the party has not announced any such rally, and Som had been told that it isn’t necessary.
While Meerut was on tenterhooks, reports of the marchers along with Som carrying weapons came in.
Samajwadi Party leader Atul Pradhan also announced a counter yatra – Sadbhavana Yatra. Both the yatras were to begin from Meerut.
