On Tuesday, the district administration of Ghaziabad opened the nomination filing process for candidates. The last day to accept the nominations is January 18.

Meanwhile, the model code of conduct for elections has been enforced in Ghaziabad. Police officials have been asked to strictly enforce the model code in the municipal limits of the city. Until the elections are held, people will not be allowed to carry more than Rs 2.5 lakh in cash.

Nearly 12 lakh people are expected to participate in the voting process, which will take place through electronic voting machines in 1,164 booths across the city. The counting of votes will take place on February 9.

The nomination papers submitted to contest by-elections for the post of mayor of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) were scrutinized at the district collectorate on Tuesday to select the final list. A total of 14 candidates had submitted their papers on the last day of nomination filing process on Monday to contest by-elections.

Bharatiya Janata Party nominee Ashu Verma, Congress candidate Lalman Singh and Samajwadi Party candidate Sudhan Rawat were among those who submitted their papers to the Returning Officer.

The nominations were filed amid tight security at the collectorate office.
