HYDERABAD: The Panchayat Raj Department has issued the notification in the form of a fixed day for the meeting of the newly elected bodies of the Gram Panchayats on February 2, with the completion of the three-phase Panchayat elections. The swearing-in of sarpanches will take place on the same day.
The elections of 12,700 Gram Panchayats in three phases are going on in the state from January 21 and the last phase of polling for 3,500 panchayats was held on Wednesday. Polling ended at 1 pm in the afternoon, whereas the counting of votes started at 2 pm. Sources in the State Election Commission (SEC) said that during the last phase of polling, the turnout was around 80 per cent.
Though the elections are being held on a non-party basis, all the political parties either fielded their leaders and workers as sarpanch candidates or supported important person in the villages. As many as 6,000 panchayats were secured by the candidates supported by the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the first two phases. While Congress party-supported candidates bagged about 1,500 panchayats, TDP, BJP, CPI, CPM and other independent candidates won rest of the panchayats. In the third phase also, TRS supported candidates are likely to secure more seats. Of total gram panchayats, about 2,000 panchayats sarpanches were elected unanimously in all the three phases.
The Telangana Panchayat elections recorded a massive 85.76 per cent polling in its first phase which concluded peacefully on January 21. The first phase comprised of 3,701 panchayats across the state. Candidates supported by the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) are ahead in the majority of panchayats.
The BJP-affiliated candidates secured victory in 62 panchayats, Telugu Desam Party- in 22, CPI in 19 and CPI (M) in 30 gram panchayats, while independents captured 701 gram panchayats.
The results included 769 gram panchayats for which sarpanch and ward members were elected unanimously. Elections to nine gram panchayats could not be held due to court cases and other reasons.
