The much-awaited notification for elections to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will be issued in the next three-four days with the reservation of wards, pending with the State Government, expected to be completed before that.
This was stated by State Election Commissioner (SEC) V. Nagi Reddy here on Monday while speaking to newspersons during a break at the meeting of the general and expenditure observers for the polls.
Stating that GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy would be the Election Officer, the SEC said the exercise of delimitation of wards, finalisation of polling stations and reservation of wards should have been completed by December 15. However, reservation of wards was delayed at the State Government end.
With 70.6 lakh electorate, elections to the GHMC council would be the major electoral exercise in the newly-formed State as nearly one-third of its population stays in the corporation area, Mr. Nagi Reddy said and asked people to turnout in large numbers for voting.
“Voter turnout has always been low in GHMC elections. It is the responsibility of people from all sections to vote as it is a powerful tool in their hands to express their mind,” the SEC noted.
Mr. Nagi Reddy said nearly 80,000 personnel, including about 27,000 police, would be on election duties.
