National Commission for Women Likely to get civil court status

The National Commission for Women (NCW) is all set to be promoted to the status of a civil court with jurisdiction over Jammu and Kashmir too. Every happening before the commission will have the status of a judicial proceeding and it will have the power to issue arrest warrants if the summons are not heeded to. Ministry of Women and Child Development under Maneka Gandhi is including in an amended version of the NCW Act, 1990 in which these changes are likely to take place. Sources said that Maneka Gandhi, wants to give teeth to the commission and make it a body at par with the National Human Rights Commission. Soon after the new government took over, the ministry sent feelers to NCW chairperson and members that it would like to reconstitute the body.

Reduced duties on automobiles and other durables will continue till December. FM

Modi government decided to extend the excise duty concessions announced by the previous UPA-II government in its interim budget for another six months till December 31, 2014 "Excise duties for some vehicles were reduced in February this year. Some concessions were also granted to some capital and consumer durables. The government has decided to extend this facility further for six months," Jaitley said. Former finance minister P Chidambaram had in his interim budget in February reduced excise duty from 12 to 10 per cent on capital goods and consumer non-durables falling under Chapter 84 and 85 of the Schedule to the Central Excise Tariff Act.

80 per cent India faces scanty rainfall, Modi government's big Challenge,

Narendra Modi government is not facing just a deficit budget; it is also facing a scanty monsoon. Possibly, the below normal rainfall would be the biggest challenge which may test the administrative capabilities of the new government. According to weather office reports, almost 80 per cent of India has received below normal rainfall in the first month of June. Weather experts feel that the situation may perk up only in July and August. India gets maximum rain during July and August. The sowing has not even started in most parts of India due to shortage of rain. The Monsoon, which was late by almost a week, has been good in Kerala.

NDA decided to give 33% reservation for women in police forces in all UTs

Women’s reservation Bill in the Parliament is still unknown; the NDA government has decided to have 33 per cent reservation for women in police forces in all seven union territories including Delhi, a proposal that was initiated by the previous UPA regime. The ministry, which is preparing a Cabinet note to the effect has already sent advisories to all the states to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in their police forces. The ministry has also included the proposal in the 100-day agenda for the new government, sources said. Union home minister Rajnath Singh who reviewed the status of women representation in police forces Tuesday asked officials to expedite the filling up of these posts. The minister was informed that Chandigarh with 16.18 per cent women police force lead the race among all seven Union Territories while Puducherry with 5.89 per cent women force was at the bottom. Delhi has 7.61 per cent women among its police force while Lakshwadeep has 10.52 per cent. The all India average representation of women in the police forces is only 5.33 per cent — 84,479 police women — against the actual strength of 15.85 lakh police force in the country.

Cabinet note proposes changes in Rangarajan formula on gas pricing: Sources

Finally after due discussions and deliberations Oil Ministry is ready with a Cabinet note on gas pricing. The Ministry is awaiting a final call from the Cabinet on the uniform domestic gas price. According to sources, Ministry in its note has proposed modifications in the Rangarajan gas price formula and has called it 'flawed'. The modified formula pegs gas price at $6-6.70/mmbtu. The Cabinet note is said to be prepared after consultation with PMO and the Law Minister.
