NEW DELHI: BJP looks set to not only retain power in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, but to increase its majority in both assemblies in the impending state elections, according to an opinion poll for a television channel.

The findings will come as a morale booster for the Bhartiya Janata Party and an alarm bell for the Congress in elections that are being regarded as trailers for the general elections due next year.

The poll done by CSDS for CNN-IBN predicted that in MP :

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP would win between 148 and 160 seats in the 230-member assembly, against the 143 it won in 2008.

Similarly,The poll done by CSDS for CNN-IBN predicted that in Chhattisgarh :

1>in Chhattisgarh, the Raman Singh-led party is projected to win between 61 and 71 seats in the 90-member assembly, giving it a two-thirds majority. In 2008, the BJP had won 50 seats.

2>The Congress tally is projected to come down correspondingly in both states. Against the 71 it won in MP last time, the latest projection is that it will bag anywhere between 52 and 62 seats. In neighbouring Chhattisgarh the 2008 tally of 38 seats is estimated to decline to between 16 and 24.

In both cases, the ruling BJP is seen as benefiting from a strong pro-incumbency sentiment.

In MP, the poll showed that 72% were satisfied with the government's performance, while in Chhattisgarh the satisfaction level was at 66%.

That could explain why the poll finds that the BJP's vote share in MP is set to increase by 6.4 percentage points over the 2008 level and in Chhattisgarh it could rise by 5.7 percentage points.

An interesting difference is that while in Chhattisgarh, BJP's gain in vote share is at the expense of Congress, which is predicted to shed 6.6 percentage points compared to 2008, in MP Congress too is gaining, though less than one percentage point.
