UPA to bag Kerala, Karnataka; TDP Andhra: Opinion poll

UPA-Govt

NEW DELHI: The Congress and its allies have a clear edge in Kerala and Karnataka, but face a rout in Andhra Pradesh and a wipe-out in Tamil Nadu, with regional parties aligned to neither UPA nor NDA ruling the roost in both these states, according to an opinion poll done for a TV channel.

The poll, done by CSDS for CNN-IBN and released on Tuesday, suggested that in Andhra Pradesh, it is the TDP which is ahead of the rest and is likely to win anywhere between 13 and 19 seats of the 42 the state has. Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress could be a close second with 9-15 seats, while the Congress and TRS could each get between four and eight seats.

In Tamil Nadu, which has 39 seats, while vote shares suggest a triangular contest between the AIADMK, the DMK-led coalition and the BJP and its allies, seat projections give the AIADMK a clear lead with 15-21 seats. The DMK alliance could win between 10 and 16 seats while the NDA could pick up six to 10 seats, the poll projected.

In Karnataka, the state that gave the BJP its biggest chunk of MPs in 2009, the Congress is projected to be in the lead and likely to win between 12 and 18 of the total 28 seats while the BJP could win 7-13 seats. "Others", the poll suggested, would win between one and four seats.

In Kerala, the ruling UDF is estimated to have the edge and is predicted to win between 11 and 17 of the state's 20 seats, while the opposition LDF could end up with somewhere between four and eight seats.

Kerala was also the only one of the four southern states in which Rahul Gandhi (24%) was preferred over Narendra Modi (12%) as a PM candidate. In all the other states, Modi was the clear leader of the PM's race, though in the Telangana region both Rahul and Modi polled 21% each.
