GURGAON: It's the men who have shunned parties and are running for the Gurgaon seat on their own steam who are the richest among candidates from the city in the fray for the assembly elections.

Sukhbir Kataria, an independent sitting MLA who had an alliance with the Congress and became state sports minister, is the richest candidate from the Gurgaon assembly constituency with assets nearly Rs 104 crore. Kataria was the richest Gurgaon candidate even during the 2009 polls with a declared wealth of around Rs 38 crore. Named in nine FIRs since in the fake voter identity cards case, he calls himself a "social worker" by profession in his declaration before the Election Commission. Kataria is facing a Special Investigation Team probe in the case.

In all 90 seats across Haryana, Kataria is the fourth richest candidate after Venod Sharma (HJCP), Gopal Kanda (HLP) and Savitri Jindal (Congress). The value of Kataria's assets rose more than three times during the past five years, largely owing to the appreciation of his land holdings and other property. Kataria has movable assets worth Rs 10 crore and immovable assets worth Rs 82 crore. His movable and immovable assets in 2009 were Rs 3 crore and 35 crore, respectively.

RS Rathee, another independent candidate and president of Gurgaon Citizen's Council (GCC), is second on the list of richest candidates from the city with the combined assets of him and his wife above Rs 30 crore. According to his affidavit, he also owns agricultural land in Rohtak worth Rs 2.23 crore. In the last assembly polls, Rathee's assets were valued at Rs 5 crore.

With the support of most prominent residents' welfare associations in Gurgaon, Rathee has no criminal case against him and his agenda is to provide better facilities to the people of Gurgaon. BJP candidate Umesh Aggarwal is third on the rich list with the combined assets of him and his wife worth around Rs 13 crore. His assets have grown more than 10 times compared with the Rs 1.21 crore he had declared in the previous elections. Aggarwal and his wife also own agricultural land worth Rs 2 crore and Rs 1.5 crore, respectively. He has no cases pending against him.

Gopichand Gehlot, the INLD candidate from Gurgaon, has total assets worth Rs 7.8 crore, making him fourth on the list of richest candidates the city seat. The seniormost politician, veteran Congressman Dharambir Gaba (82), has assets worth Rs 5.6 crore. According to his affidavit, Gaba has movable assets worth Rs 3.31 crore and a house in New Colony area of Gurgaon worth Rs 2 crore.

As far as Badshapur is concerned, BJP candidate Narbir Singh is not just the richest but is also the most educated, having completed his graduation. Narbir, has Rs 46.16 crore (of which Rs 3.49 crore is in his spouse's name) worth of immovable assets apart from about Rs 5 crore in movable assets.
