BJP may release first list of candidates on Saturday

GURGAON: With strong speculation that Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) may release its first list of candidates for the forthcoming assembly polls on Saturday evening, supporters of all probable candidates for the Gurgaon seat are holding public meetings in different localities to drum up support in their favour.

From around 20 people who had applied for the BJP ticket from the Gurgaon assembly constituency ? which included local leaders, advocates, social activists and real estate agents ? the fight has whittled down to three. The party is likely to decide between former minister Rao Narbir Singh, Haryana Insaaf Manch president G L Sharma and state BJP media in-charge Umesh Aggarwal.

Rao Narbir Singh held meetings with local residents in the old city on Friday to discuss their grievances. G L Sharma, who is busy holding meetings across the constituency every day, met hundreds of residents of Sector 15 on Wednesday, where people raised issues related to power and water supply. Umesh Aggarwal held a ?jan adalat' in Sector 12A on Friday to discuss local issues with residents.

According to party sources, the first list is likely to be announced on Saturday after top BJP leaders meet in Delhi. Rao Narbir Singh was in the shortlist for the Lok Sabha ticket, which eventually went to Rao Inderjit Singh. It is speculated that he, therefore, leads the race for the assembly ticket.

Sharma figures in the probables' list due to his proximity with MoS (defence) and Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit Singh. Aggarwal, who came third from Gurgaon in the 2009 assembly polls, securing 24,000 votes, is also a hopeful, because of his long association with the party.

Sources said all three probable candidates are holding public meetings in the city to gather support and put forward their claim for candidature. "The party has already short-listed candidates for the Gurgaon and Badshapur assembly constituencies, and the names will be announced shortly. This is a routine process. Those who miss out on a ticket must continue to work for the party and ensure it repeats its Lok Sabha performance," said a senior leader.
