The legislative assembly election was held on 28 November 2018 to elect members of the 40 constituencies in Mizoram.
Voting finished in Mizoram, where the BJP is aiming to wrest control from the Congress which has been ruling the northeast state since it was formed in 1987. Polling in the 40-member legislative assembly of the hill state will decide the fate of 209 candidates. The BJP -- which has never won an assembly election in Mizoram - is contesting in 39 seats.
The voter turnout for the Mizoram assembly elections has increased by up to 80% by 9 pm. This figure can also rise further. This is because the data from the remote areas are still waiting.
The Election Commission has set up 15 special polling stations at Kanhmun, a village along the Mizoram-Tripura border, to facilitate voting by Reang tribal refugees, sheltered in Tripura for the past 21 years.
Mizoram with a population of about 10 lakh, including nearly 7.68 lakh voters, is seen by the BJP as the "final frontier" in the North-East as it is in power in all other states of the region -- either by winning polls or aligning with regional parties.
However, the main contest is likely to be between the ruling Congress and the MNF. Both the parties have fielded 40 candidates each. The BJP has fielded candidates in 39 constituencies.
The counting of votes for Mizoram will take place on December 11, along with that of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana and Madhya Pradesh where assembly elections are also being held.
