After 70 rejections, 172 still in fray for 18 seats.
RAIPUR: Nearly 70 of the 242 nominations made for the 18 assembly seats, going to polls in the first phase on November 11, were rejected during scrutiny on Saturday, leaving 172 in fray. However, the exact number of contestants would be known only after the withdrawals on Monday.
According to officials, while 10 nominations were rejected in Rajnandagaon- the home constituency of chief minister Raman Singh, five were turned down in Khairagarh. None of the 18 constituencies were free from rejections. Officials attributed most of the rejections to the duplicate set of papers filed by candidates.
The constituencies of Rajnandgaon and Jagdalpur have largest number of nominations and if no withdrawals take place, two EVMs would be required to feed in the names and symbols of all the contestants.
Meanwhile, 13 candidates have filed their nomination papers for second phase of assembly election on Saturday.
