Bihar Chief Minister-designate Nitish Kumar on Wednesday invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the swearing-in ceremony of his new government on November 20. On Friday, Nitish will take oath for the fifth time as Bihar’s Chief Minister at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan.

Ending speculation over the invite, Nitish spoke to the PM over telephone and extended his invitation. While PM Modi will not attend the event, the Union government will be represented at the function by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu and MoS (Independent Charge) Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

JD (U) state president Bashistha Narayan Singh said it was part of protocol to invite the Prime Minister. The party’s national spokesperson KC Tyagi said: “It is a matter of standard protocol to invite the PM. Even Arvind Kejriwal invited him, but the PM did not attend…We are looking forward to good relationship with the Centre.”

The JD(U), meanwhile, is working towards using the stage to send out a message about a potential anti-BJP alliance at the national level through the presence of top leaders from non-BJP parties. On Wednesday evening, Nitish tweeted a list of important invitees who had confirmed their plans to attend Friday’s swearing-in.

The list of 35 people included Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, DMK’s MK Stalin, former PM HD Deve Gowda, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, Sikkim CM Pawan Kumar Chamling, UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh, Arunachal Pradesh CM Nabam Tuki, and Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah. The Left, which is now eager to mend ties with the socialist bloc after fighting against the Grand Alliance in Bihar, will be represented by CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI’s D Raja. The confirmed list of invitees included former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, former Haryana CM Bhupendra Singh Hooda, former Gujarat CM S S Vaghela, former Jharkhand CMs Babulal Marandi and Hemant Soren, former J&K CMs Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, RLD chief Ajit Singh, INLD leader Abhay Chautala and Congress’s Mallikarjun Kharge.
