Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party has walked out of the Janata Parivar in Bihar following differences over the number of seats that its leadership wanted to contest in the state Assembly elections scheduled to be held sometime in October and November.
Samajwadi Party, which has a negligible presence in Bihar, had been given five seats by the Janata Dal United-Rashtriya Janata Dal-Congress alliance. Intially the Mulayam led party was not given any seat by the JDU-RJD-Congress alliance and only after Samajwadi party's Bihar unit raised a hue and cry, it was allotted five seats - two from the RJD quota and three given to the Nationalist Congress Party which has also decided to contest alone.
Earlier, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief and relative of SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, had declared that SP has been given five seats to contest the Bihar poll.
“While making seat distribution the major parties in Bihar did not consider or even contacted Samajwadi Party on the issue,” Mr. Yadav said.
Mr Yadav also declared that SP could also go into Bihar poll along with other parties “but talks are in primary stage now”.
To present a united face of the grand alliance recently the SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav had come to Patna to participate in the Swabhiman rally held at Patna on August 30.
When asked about any murmuring over seat adjustment with Samajwadi Party, RJD chief Lalu Prasad had said “five seats have been given to SP and everything is fine now.”
The ruling JD-U has "cheated everyone", Sinha said after the SP pulled out of the Janata Parivar.
Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United, and Lalu Prasad's Rashtriya Janata Dal, besides others, came together to contest the Bihar assembly elections as Janata Parivar, a sort of anti-Modi bloc.
Yadav said that at the time of Janata Parivar's formation, "I had said that I will not sign the party's death warrant".
He said that the party's Bihar unit will prepare a list of candidates for the upcoming elections.
