Patna: State BJP brass on Wednesday released three pigeons symbolizing peace and hoped there would be no communal riots in the state if an NDA government is formed following the assembly election scheduled to be held in October-November.

Speaking at the Muslim Bedari (awareness/awakening) Muhim (MBM) conference, former deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi (SuMo) recalled PM Narendra Modi's words at the Hunkar rally at Patna Gandhi Maidan on October 27, 2013, that "poor" Hindus and Muslims should not involve themselves in communal riots and, instead, join hands for mutual uplift.

SuMo said a large number of Muslims in Gujarat, unlike in Bihar, were able to go on haj pilgrimage because of their improved economic position. "The BJP is going to Bihar assembly election on development agenda. It will benefit both Hindus and Muslims," he said.

Speakers at the MBM conference referred to communal riots in the country, including in Bihar, under the post-independence Congress ruled states, as well as during the 15-year "Lalu-Rabri rule" and 10 years of Bihar under ruling JD(U) with Nitish Kumar as CM. As to Bihar, the worst had been the 1989 communal riots that claimed over 1,000 lives.

Interestingly, the speakers skipped the comparative demographic positions of major religious groups in the country, as revealed in the Census report and released in Delhi on Tuesday. The Muslim population share in Bihar is 16.9%.

"Today, Nitish has joined hands with Lalu, and also with the Congress under whose government the Bhagalpur riots occurred," SuMo said. In keeping with the theme of MBM meet on the role of Muslims during the elections, he said Muslims of the state have to define whose government they want - of the JD(U), RJD and Congress 'mahagathbandhan', or of the NDA.

State BJP chief Mangal Pandey said the "line adopted by Muslims of the state" would determine as to whose government would be formed.
