rajiv gandhiThe country on Tuesday fondly remembered former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 69th birth anniversary with President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leading the nation in paying tributes to the departed leader.

Mr. Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari and Dr. Singh paid florab tributes at Vir Bhumi, the samadhi of Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv’s wife and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, son and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, daughter Priyanka Vadra and her husband Robert Vadra, also paid tributes.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath, Finance Minister P Chidambaram, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, Road Transport Minister Oscar Fernandes and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit were among the other leaders who paid tributes to the departed leader.

Devotional music was played throughout the programme.

Scores of National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of Congress, members were also present on the occasion.

A group of Congress workers, mostly from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, who were part of the Sadbhavna Yatra to spread the message of national harmony and integration against terrorism, were also present at Vir Bhumi.

Rajiv Gandhi, who served as the sixth Prime Minister of India from 1984-1989, was assassinated by the LTTE on May 21, 1991 in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu while addressing an election campaign.

Newborns on Rajiv Gandhi's birthday to get cash award

TRICHY: Babies born on Tuesday (August 20), the birth anniversary of former Prime MinisterRajiv Gandhi would be presented with Rs 2,500 cash by Joseph Louis, the son of late Congress MP L Adaikalaraj. Louis, a member of the general body of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and one of the three sons of the four-time MP, who passed away in September last year, is said to make an entry into mainstream politics with this freebie scheme.

Louis extended an invitation to the mothers who might give birth to their babies on August 20 to register their names at his office at Jenny Plaza on Bharathiyaar Saalai. Interestingly, the certificates of the fixed deposit would be handed over to the parents on September 16, the birthday of Union finance minister P Chidambaram.

Meanwhile, G Jerome Arockiaraj, president of the of Trichy city district Congress committee said that elaborate plans are on to celebrate the 69th birthday of the former Prime Minister on Tuesday. A number of welfare schemes are expected to be announced during the day.
