State elections deliver mixed bag of results for PM Narendra Modi in the first year, upcoming Assembly Election 2015

State elections deliver mixed bag of results for PM Narendra Modi in the first year

After his spectacular victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced five state Assembly elections in the first year of his office. These states delivered him a mixed bag of results as Modi failed to repeat what he achieved in the Lok Sabha election in these Assembly elections.

Like the Lok Sabha polls, even in state elections Modi was the central figure. The entire campaign was centered around him. Except Delhi, the BJP had no chief ministerial candidate in the four other states - Maharashtra, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Jharkhand.

Only Modi and the BJP national president Amit Shah managed the entire show.

Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana were very important for the Modi-led BJP as it was their first election after the massive victory in Lok Sabha elections in May 2014.

The party managed to win both, but the victory was not as decisive as the Lok Sabha win. In Haryana, the ruling Congress was facing 10 years of anti-incumbency, in Maharashtra the ruling Congress-NCP combine was also facing 15 years of anti-incumbency.
