Assembly Election 2014: BJP to release final list of candidates before August 15
As many as 84 candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed their interest in contesting the Assembly elections due later this year, from Pune and neighbouring constituencies. As per the seat-sharing arrangement between BJP, Shiv Sena and RPI, the former will contest eight seats in this region:
- Shirur-Haveli,
- Shivajinagar,
- Khadakwasla,
- Parvati,
- Kasba,
- Maval,
- Daund
- Pimpri-Chichwad.
The 84 aspirants — including 10 women — appeared before an interview panel on Tuesday afternoon, and were grilled by senior BJP leaders Haribhau Bagade and Pandurang Phundkar. Of the 84, Bagade said, 18 were party workers from Shirur Haveli, 15 from Shivajinagar, four from Khadkwasla, five from Parvati, six from Kasba, 16 from Maval, 14 from Daund and six from Pimpri Chinchwad.
"The interested candidates were quizzed about their constituency's socio-political structure, the names of probable rival candidates, the kind of work s/he has done in his/her constituency, etc," Bagade said. He added that the party is likely to declare its first official list of candidates by August 15.
The interview panel also received an application requesting the Cantonment seat be given to BJP. Apart from that, party workers from Wadgaonsheri and Kothrud have also claimed tickets, but these constituencies are with the Sena. Phundkar said these issues will be discussed with state leaders. BJP city secretary Sandip Khardekar, said, "These demands will be submitted before State and Central executive committees, and after discussions, a decision will be taken on the same."
The senior BJP leader claimed that the party's performance in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year has party workers in a buoyant mood, and may even demand more seats be allotted under a new seat-sharing formula. "In the 2009 Assembly elections, BJP contested 117 seats to the Sena's 171. But we would like to increase our tally; we hope the BJP gets its due," he said.
