• V S Achuthananda, an Opposition leader is seeking an inquiry into the assets of Chief Secretary E K Bharat Bhushan and has written to PM Narendra Modi for the same. In the letter, he is looking for a probe by the Central Vigilance Commissioner into the bureaucrat’s alleged “real estate” links. He alleges that in the compulsory affidavit of assets maintained by the government, Bhushan has concealed the details related to the properties owned by him and his wife.
• PM Modi is likely to expand his Cabinet next month. It is likely that he will add around dozen of new ministers when the expansion will take place in the month of August. In the expected list are the names of ministers such as Hazaribagh MP Jayant Sinha and BJP general secretary JP Nadda.
• The government has taken a major step to increase the role of women in the armed forces. It has allowed that the lady officers can command the battalions in the branches of army such as aviation, signal and engineers. The women will now be eligible to head the units and compete with their male counterparts.
• To put some relief in the controversies pertaining to the language bias in the UPSC, which has resulted in protests by the aspiring aspirants, the government is of the view to postpone the dates of the examination in case the pattern is changed. According to the sources, the government is in a hope to bring a solution which will be acceptable to all.
• The central team of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has visited Tripura to inspect the situation after the alleged attacks on party cadres by the supporters of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). The BJP delegation including members Tarun Vijay and Satyanarayan Jatia visited the rural areas where clashes took place after the panchayat polls on July 15.
• The Union ministers of the Modi government have been told to implement the maximum budgetary proposals before 10 August 2014 so that PM Narendra Modi can deliver a spectacular speech during Independence Day. Ajit Seth, Cabinet Secretary has directed the ministers to introduce necessary reforms before 15 August so that Modi can present achievements of his government during his speech while addressing the nation.
• The home ministry has denied the bugging at the residence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. It has ruled out any probe in this matter. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said that there is no contradiction and Gadkari has himself denied this. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has also refused to comment on this issue and has said that there is nothing concrete in this.
