- Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said that the ongoing Parliament session was not going to be cut short. He also added that the government has enough business and it would bring important bills in the near future, including Insurance Bill and the Security Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Bill. Opposing opposition criticism that there was no business before Parliament, he said, “There is no proposal as of now to cut short the Parliament session. The government is also working on judicial appointments bill and there are some more bills. We have enough business for Parliament”. The ongoing budget session is on till August 14.
- The NDA government has deferred its decision to procure 16 multi-role helicopters for the Indian Navy. As per sources, the reason behind this is the involvement of Finmeccannica (the parent organization of scam-hit firm AgustaWestland), which is linked with one of the two companies in the race for the deal. The government had cancelled the contract on January 1 and began the process of encashing the bank guarantee of AgustaWestland.
- External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today described her three-day visit to Nepal as ‘very successful’. She said that both the countries have decided to extend their cooperation in several areas to reinforce bilateral ties. Before leaving Kathmandu, she said, “It was a very successful trip and the results were more than my expectations”. On her visit, she met Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and President Ram Baran Yadav, among others. She was in Nepal to co-chair the meeting of the Indo-Nepal Joint Commission in order to prepare the ground for PM Narendra Modi’s two-day official visit to the country.
- PM Narendra Modi launched a website MyGov to help citizens give their opinions on relevant issues such as skill training and civic issues. The launch of the portal saw the presence of many dignitaries, including Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth and Communications and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, among others. The PM said, “The platform would bridge gap gulf between people and government. Democracy cannot succeed without people's participation in government and this participation should not be limited only during elections”.
- PM Narendra Modi met secretaries of important infrastructure ministries like civil aviation, telecom, power and road and highways. The object was to review development targets of individual sectors that are to be met by the current fiscal end. The key infrastructure projects are currently on hold because of lack of clearance and several legal issues. The government wants to sort out these issues.
- Home Minister Rajnath Singh met PM Narendra Modi and apprised him of current situation in riot-hit Saharanpur, along with students’ protests against UPSC syllabus. He also told him about the steps being taken by the Centre to solve them. He said that he had been personally monitoring the entire situation and had also asked the UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to take all steps to control the situation.
