PM Narendra Modi asks for instant trial into cases against MPs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to look into ways of speeding up cases against politicians who are facing trial and investigations. Law ministry is expected to work in coordination with the Home Ministry on preparing a blue print to deal with cases that have been lodged against politicians. As per sources, the first step that the government is looking is to ensure an all party consensus. The government wants that cases against politicians should not drag on beyond a certain stipulated time. Sources also say that the government wants that the act of seeking bail, adjournments etc should not be converted to be used a delaying tactic.

Government cannot bring back black money in our lifetime: BJP MP

A Bharatiya Janata Party MP on Thursday said India will not be able to bring back black money from Switzerland "in our lifetime", in a comment that could be seen as embarrassing for his party's government at the Centre which has declared its commitment to fufil this task.

"We will not be able to bring back black money from Switzerland in our lifetime," said Nishikant Dubey, MP from Godda in Jharkhand, in the Lok Sabha while participating in a debate on Finance Bill. Dubey, who was the first member from the Treasury branches to speak on the issue, said, "We cannot bring it back because people have formed trusts. Citizens of Switzerland are employees who hold the trust. "When you ask for money and names, you will seek names of Indians.

There is no question of asking the name of the trustees. And if we don't, then how will we get back black money from Switzerland," he said. The Narendra Modi government had only last month asserted in Parliament that it is "determined to rid the country of the scourge of corruption and the menace of black money stashed in foreign banks.

"As a first step in this direction, the government has already constituted an SIT to unearth black money stashed abroad. This will be followed up vigorously by proactively engaging with foreign governments," President Pranab Mukherjee had said in his address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament in June while outlining the vision of the Narendra Modi government.

PM Narendra Modi to visit Nepal on August 3-4

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Nepal on August 3 on a two-day official trip, the first Indian premier to tour the country after a gap of nearly 18 years. "Indian Prime Minister will visit Nepal from August 3 to 4 at the invitation of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and the date has been finalised," Foreign Minister Mahendra Pandey said. Pandey's comments came shortly after his meeting with Prime Minister Koirala at his official residence on Thursday. This will be the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nepal after a gap of nearly 18 years.

Koirala had extended invitation to Modi, when he visited Delhi during the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP leader. Prime Minister Koirala has recently returned from USA where he had gone on a medical trip. He was administered radiotherapy to cure his  lung cancer at a New York hospital.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will arrive here on Friday to pave way for Prime Minister Modi's first visit to Nepal after assuming the office in May. This will be also her first visit to Nepal after assuming the office. Prime Minister Modi has accorded high priority to the neighbouring countries soon after he assumed the top post.

UPSC language row rocks Parliament

New Delhi: Opposition on Friday created ruckus in Parliament over the issue of regional language aspirants having disadvantage in Civil Services examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice during Question Hour following Opposition's demand for a clarification by no other than the Prime Minister or the Leader of the House on the issue. The matter figured in Lok Sabha too though it did not lead to any adjournment.

As soon as the upper House assembled, Congress, SP, DMK and others raised the issue, but Chairman Hamid Ansari asked them to maintain silence for making a reference to the tragic incident in Telengana yesterday in which 14 students were killed. The House observed a minute's silence as a mark of repect for the deaprted.

Soon after, the Opposition raised the issue with some even proceeding to the well. Ansari asked them not to come to the well and they abided by his advice, but vociferous protests went on. The Chairman's repeated requests to maintain order went in vain and he adjourned the House for 15 minutes.

The scene did not change much when the House reassembled. Some members from treasury Benches tried to pacify the Opposition with the assurance that the concerned Minister would come to the House and give a statement post noon. Telecom and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government was serious about the issue. "Why at 12 and not now?" asked Satyavrat Chaturvedi (Cong) and as the din continued, Ansari adjourned the House till noon.
