IIT, IIM, NIT, Central University to be set up in Andhra Pradesh: Smriti Irani
Premier institutes such as IIT, an IIM, a NIT, a central university and a petroleum university would be set up in Andhra Pradesh as envisaged in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday said.
Steps would also be taken to set up an Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), a tribal university, an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), an agriculture university, a National Institute of
Disaster Management and an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) type of institute in the state, she said in the Lok Sabha.
"In Telangana, one horticulture university and one tribal University are proposed to be established as per the Act. "Details of locations and budgetary provisions for these institutions are yet to be finalized," she said in a written reply.
New IITs and IIMs have also been proposed in the general budget in different states, she said adding two institutions of excellence like the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Assam and Jharkhand, an agriculture university in Rajasthan and a horticulture university in Haryana are also proposed.
A Jai Prakash Narayan National Centre for Excellence in Humanities in Madhya Pradesh is also proposed to be set up. Details of locations and budgetary provisions are yet to be finalized, she said.
OP Kohli takes oath as Gujarat Governor
Senior BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP, OP Kohli was sworn-in as the 24th Governor of Gujarat at a ceremony held on Wednesday. At the beginning, Chief Secretary to Gujarat Government, Varesh Sinha read out the warrant of appointment by the President of India about Kohli's appointment as Governor, following which the Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, Bhaskar Bhattacharya administered the oath of office to 78-year-old Kohli.
The ceremony was attended by several state ministers and top officers. Kohli replaced Dr Kamla Beniwal, who had frosty relations with the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi, especially on the issues like appointment of Lokayukta and on approving certain legislations, including one that provides for 50 per cent reservation to women in local bodies, which were passed by the state Assembly.
Beniwal was transferred to Mizoram in a gubernatorial reshuffle affected by the BJP-led NDA government on July 6, where she will serve the remainder of her term till November. Meanwhile, during his interaction with media after the ceremony, Kohli said, "It's like home-coming for me. Gujarat is like a home to me. Earlier, I had stayed in Bhavnagar in Saurashtra region in the state. It is not unknown territory for me. This is the state of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel and I am very happy to be here."
Parliament disruptions not due to any muscle power: Prakash Javadekar
Parliament gets disrupted not because of members wanting to test their muscle or lung power but often when they try to raise people's issues, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar on Wednesday said.
"When you see Parliament getting disrupted, what is it all about? It is not about people wanting to fight it out. It is not because people want to test their muscle power or lung power. It is because sincerely many times they want to put across the difficulties faced by the people," he said.
He was speaking at an event held at the GMC Balayogi Auditorium in the Parliament Complex where students of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas were awarded for their performance in National Youth Parliament competitions.
"We are making rules and rules always change. So there is discussion about... And many people believe if there was no publicity or there was no telecast, people will not be doing disruptions the way they are doing now. Some people feel that if their face is shown (in media), those in the constituency would get to know about their work," he said.
High drama in Rajya Sabha as MP lists debate on Gaza without Swaraj's consent
There was high drama in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday due to confusion over a debate on the Gaza crisis. Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar had listed the debate, but External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj wrote to the Rajya Sabha Chairman claiming that her consent wasn't sought before listing the debate.
Opposition MPs came prepared for the Gaza debate but the government pitched for a debate on the Rail Budget instead.
Government sources said that it was an error on Javadekar's part to list the debate without Sushma Swaraj's consent. The House had to be adjourned for the day following the chaos.
Congress leader Ambika Soni said, "Our commitment to Palestine and our association with late yaser Arafat is almost a part of Congress history. More than 200 people have even butchered in Gaza including children. So when we have been associated for so long then we have to raise it."
