Gujarat gets its lifeline: Narmada Dam height to be raised by 17 meters: Ctsy. Modi Govt

A longstanding demand of Gujarat has been granted as government has decided to raise the height of the Narmada Dam by 17 metres —— within 20 days of Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister, raising protests from activist Medha Patkar who drew attention to the resultant displacement of thousands of people.

The Narmada Control Authority (NCA) has approved the proposal to raise the dam's height from 121.9 meters to 138.7 meters, making it the second highest dam in the world after Grand Coulee in the US. The approval came two days after the Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel met Modi and water resources minister Uma Bharti.

Decision was taken in an undemocratic manner says Medha Patkar, who heads the Narmada Bachao Andolan, she held a press conference in Mumbai to say the "The government has neither given us any hearing nor has it taken any time or made any attempt to know the ground reality before deciding on the dam's height," she said.
