Vyapam to be main issue for Ujjain, Morena civic polls

BHOPAL: The Congress on Wednesday announced two mayoral candidates, Dr Kavita Gomey for Ujjain and Rajendra Solanki for Morena municipal corporations, after a long tiff between aspirants over ticket distribution. BJP has already announced the names and claimed that party would rout the opponent as did in recent Garoth assembly by-poll.

Congress state president Arun Yadav also declared 54 candidates for Ujjain and 45 candidates for Morena municipal corporations, respectively. Delay in releasing the names has once again exposed the infighting in the party with various factions staking their claim for the coveted seats.

Party chief spokesperson K K Mishra said that the party followed democratic procedure in selecting the names for both civic bodies as party leaders were willing to give a tough fight to BJP, who is marred by Vyapam, the biggest scandal of the country. ``We have conveyed clear message to all voters and public in general that how BJP can play with the future of young generation. This fight will be decisive and prove a turning point in state politics'', claimed Mishra. He also announced that Vyapam would be the biggest issue for civic elections in the state.

Contrary to the Congress claims, BJP state president Nandkumar Singh denied that Vyapam would affect civic elections in Ujjain and Morena. He said Vyapam was never a controversial issue and what has been claimed is a farce by the Congress. ``Congress produced fabricated documents to destabilise BJP government but failed in misguiding the public'', he alleged.

Nandkumar further said that voters rely on BJP and aware of Congress planks. ``There is no nervousness among party candidates as rumoured by the rivals'', he said.

BJP won all the nine civic bodies in February 2014, during the third phase of civic polls in the state. Polling for this election was held on January 31, 2015. BJP has now claimed to win Morena and Ujjain seats.

Polling for these two municipal corporations and nine other municipalities will be held on August 12. Result will be announced on August 16, according to state election commission reports.
