Indore: Congress, BJP mayoral candidates to woo voters

With two weeks left for voting to take place for the municipal elections, Congress and BJP mayoral candidates have planned special voter-contact programme  on the occasion of Makar Sankranti to be celebrated on Thursday.

Congress candidate Archana Jaiswal will distribute sesame seeds and jaggery to passers-by at Rajwada in the morning. She will then board the city bus from Rajwada to Khajrana, a four-km stretch, during which she will interact with passengers and distribute sweetmeats.

From 10am to 12pm, Congress candidates contesting the elections will take part in festivities by playing gilli-danda and distribute sesame and jaggery sweets to voters. They will also fly kites.

BJP mayoral candidate and MLA Malini Gaud has chosen assembly constituency number four which she represents as the voter-meeting venue. As per the schedule, she will take part in kite flying and gilli-danda to be organised behind Shrinath garden in Dwarkapuri. She will distribute sesame and jaggery laddoos to the people.

But unlike Congress candidates, BJP nominees apart from Gaud, have no specific plan to woo the voters. However, they will celebrate the festival with the people.

Makar Sankranti is the only major festival which falls before the municipal elections scheduled on January 31. Normally, festivals provide an occasion when parties go an extra mile to woo the voters under the pretext of exchanging greetings.

Meanwhile, state Congress president Arun Yadav would visit the city on Friday to inaugurate the main election office of mayoral candidate Archana Jaiswal.
