Date of polls in Bhopal to be declared by month end

Bhopal: The announcement for urban body polls in five cities, which were withheld by high court due to delimitation, is likely to be made by the end of this month. The polls are to be conducted for municipal corporations in cities including Bhopal, Jabalpur, Indore, Chhindwara and Morena. Election schedule would be immediately after final publication of voters list announced and before December 31. If announcement for the polls is not made, then the work for preparing new voters list would start from January 1, 2015. Urban body polls would be conducted after announcement of election schedule by the end of January.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has gearing up for urban body polls to be held in these five cities where there are Municipal Corporations. As Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s mayoral seat has been declared unreserved and open for general candidates, it is almost a certainty that Alok Sharma would be made party candidate. Former MLA Ramesh Sharma (Guttu Bhaiya) and Mayor Krishna Gaur are also amongst the contenders for this seat.

As Indore seat has been reserved for OBC woman candidates, BJP organisation has made up its mind to field MLA Malini Gaur as its mayoral candidate. The name of Pooja Parihar is also in the race but Gaur is leading amongst contenders. With Jabalpur Municipal Corporation mayor seat being reserved for the woman candidats, the candidature of former Mayor Sushila Singh is very strong. Singh also enjoys support from former chief minister Sunderlal Patwa.

Although, Swati Godbole, Ashwini Paranjpe and Lavleen Anand are also in the fray. Morena will have its elections for Municipal Corporation for the first time and the mayoral seat is reserved for SC candidate. The decision for the seat has almost been made that former MP Ashok Argal would be fielded as the party candidate. Chhindwara Municipal Corporation’s mayoral seat is reserved for OBC woman candidates and Vijaya Yadav, sister of Mahila Morcha State President Lata Vankhede, is a strong contender from here. Yadav’s husband is the chairman of Krishi Upaj Mandi.

Former Municipal President Meena Rai is also trying hard to get another chnace. Kiran Hariom Soni and Shalini Sahu are also eying to get ticket from this seat. Meanwhile, the Congress has also begun scrutiny for candidates to be fielded in urban body polls but after it was routed in 10 Municipal Corporations in the first round, no big name is coming forward.
