MP Civic Polls: BJP surge continues, but no clean sweep in Phase II
BHOPAL: The BJP sweeped the second phase of civic body elections in Madhya Pradesh, but with a reduced intensity. In the second phase of civic polls, BJP bagged 81 of 143 civic bodies that went to polls on December 2. The results of the second phase of the polls were announced on Sunday.
The counting for the second phase was done on Sunday for 1 nagar nigam, 38 nagar palikas and 104 nagar parishads. The BJP remained much ahead of other political parties after bagging 81 seats. The Congress won 40, Bahujan Samaj Party won three, CPI (M) won one and independents bagged 17 seats.
The lone nagar nigam election that took place in Katni was won by the BJP whose Shashank Shrivastava defeated Congress' Cheni Chelani. Out of the total 38 nagar palikas, the BJP managed to win 22. In the 104 nagar parishads that went to polls in the second round, the BJP won at 61 places. The Congress, the main opposition party, could register its win only in 10 nagar palikas and independent candidates won at five nagar palikas.

With BJP candidate wining Katni Municipal Corporation, the party has now won all 10 urban civic bodies in the state that went to polls. Besides, BJP won 23 of 38 municipal councils while Congress could win only 9. Bahujan Samaj Party managed to bag one seat while independents won in five municipal councils.
Of 104 town councils (Nagar Parishads) that went to polls, the battle seemed tight with BJP registering wins in 57 bodies while Congress bagging 31 seats. BSP won 2 and CPI one while independents won in 12 town councils.
In the first phase, voting was done for 135 civic bodies. The BJP had registered win at all 9 nagar nigams then. Out of 126 nagar palika and nagar parishad presidents' posts, the BJP bagged 74, Congress 33, BSP 1 and independents won at 18 places in the first phase.
Elections were held in 278 civic bodies in two phases in MP including 10 municipal corporations, 64 nagar palika parishads and 204 nagar parishads. Of these, the BJP won all 10 municipal corporations, 38 nagar palika parishads and 119 nagar parishads in the state.
Seven people tried their luck for the post of mayor while 732 contested for chairperson of municipal councils chairman and 9,178 for post of corporators during the second phase of the civic polls held on December 2. A total of 3,980 polling booths were made during these polls.
With completion of the second phase, civic polls in the state have almost been completed, barring major cities of Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Chhindwara, Morena where polls were delayed over delimitation issues. Sources from the state election commission said, notification for panchayat polls which are scheduled in January will be declared by middle of this month. Most probably, civic polls in remaining urban bodies will also be held then.
