MP Civic poll: Congress, BJP await HC order to release candidates' list

MP Civic body election 2014

INDORE: With just three days left for filing nomination for civic body election, the major political parties Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are yet to come up with their list of candidates as they wait for the High Court order on expansion of city limits, which is expected to come, on Monday.

BJP has completed the screening process for candidates from 85 wards of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and selected names have been sent to Bhopal. A panel of three names for each ward has been forwarded to state election committee. "Names were short listed in consultation with mandal committee in the meeting of district and zonal committee," said city president Kailash Sharma adding that the final decision would be taken in Bhopal.

The meetings also exposed the cracks in the city unit of BJP as Indore- II MLA and close aid of Kailash Vijayvargiya, Ramesh Mendola and MLA from Depalpur, Manoj Patel did not attend the meeting and directly sent their list to senior party leaders in Bhopal.

A party source said that there is no conflict over distribution of tickets of corporators and the bone of contention is mayoral seat. Leaders from Indore-II constituency represented by Mendola want ticket for Pooja Patidar, an international athlete and active party worker from Indore-II while other party leaders and workers are pushing for candidature of MLA Malini Gour to neutralize the influence of Vijayvargiya and Mendola.

On the other hand, Congress, which is ready with its list, is awaiting HC decision. Meanwhile, party has directed some of the people to file their nomination, without waiting for announcement of list. It has promised to give them B-form (status of official party candidate) at the last moment. However, no one has come forward and till now only six independents have filed their nominations.

Former state president of Women Congress, Archana Jaiswal has emerged as strongest mayor candidate from Congress despite strong reservation of national president of Women Congress, Shobha Ojha. Ojha has removed Jaiswal from the post of state president after becoming national president and now she is opposing her candidature as mayor.
