BHOPAL: The Congress party is likely to contest the upcoming election from 229 seats, though it released the list of its candidates for 230 seats. One of its candidate from Devsar assembly constituency of Singrauli district, who was changed at the last minute, failed to submit his B form before the electoral officers on Friday in time.

Thus the Congress will be forced to support an independent. The confusion occurred as party's officially declared candidate H L Prajapati, a government doctor, who got his B form certifying his candidature from the party was not relieved from his job pending an inquiry.

Thus, at the last minute party gave the B form to another candidate, Bansmani Prasad. Prasad earlier filed his nomination as a Congress candidate prior to the declaration of tickets but he could not get B form as Prajapati was named its official candidate from Devsar.

On November 8, Congress party handed over B form to Bansmani Prasad who rushed to the returning officers office for submitting it. But he could not submit it on time.

Returning officer for Devsar D P Varman said, "He provided the B form after 3 pm which is the officially time limit for accepting the nomination related documents".

"Party brass was informed about cases against Prajapati but I don't know why my candidature was rejected. Had it been otherwise and if party had named me earlier this situation could have been avoided," Bansmani Prasad told TOI.

However, Prajapati claimed that police or Lokayukta sleuths can register cases against anyone. "I don't have any cases pending against me in court. And I handed over my resignation on November 1 to my home department".

"I don't know whether it has been accepted or not," He said. However he could not explain then why the party gave B form to another candidate at the last minute. "I don't even know whether the party gave him the ticket or not", he said.

District collector M Selvendran said, "Final status could only be clear after the scrutiny of nominations on November 9" and refused to divulge further. Bansmani Prasad said, "I have also filed my nominations as an independent and will contest as party-supported independent candidate if my Congress candidature is rejected."
