After scrutiny, 34 candidates in fray for Srirangam bypoll

TRICHY: Nomination papers of 34 candidates, including contestants from AIADMK, DMK, BJPand CPM, have been accepted by the returning officer for by-election for Srirangam constituency after the scrutiny on Wednesday. The candidature of 12 candidates, who were independents and substitutes of the accepted candidates, were rejected.

The scrutiny of the 59 nominations filed by the 46 candidates was done by election general observer Balkar Singh, returning officer V Manoharan and other officials in the presence of the candidates and their representatives at the office of the revenue divisional officer (RDO), Srirangam. The returning officer Manoharan released the list of 34 candidates whose 45 nominations were accepted.

Going by the list, K Annadurai of CPM, N Anand of DMK, M Subramaniam of BJP and S Valarmathi of AIADMK are in the fray now. The rest of the candidates belonged to registered political parties and independents. Manoharan also disclosed the list of 12 candidates who were rejected on various grounds.

The officials also rejected the nominations of the substitute candidates of the main contenders AIADMK, DMK, BJP and CPM.

Interestingly, the nominations of two independents S Ragavan and I Abdul Wahid were rejected on the grounds that they are the electors of Karnataka and according to section of 5 of RP Act, 1951 their nominations were rejected.

Meanwhile, the Trichy district Congress committee (south), which already opted out of the contest, on Wednesday submitted a petition to the district collector and the district election officer K S Palanisamy demanding to reject the nomination of BJP candidate Subramaniam.

According to district Congress president RC Babu, Subramaniam allegedly hid the details of three police cases pending him with the city police. So, he demanded his nomination be rejected.

However, the returning officer accepted the nomination of BJP candidate Subramaniam as he had followed all the procedures in filing the nominations.

"BJP candidate Subramaniam filled the Form-26 as per the EC guidelines which say none of the columns in the form should be left out. The candidate mentioned 'Nil' in the column about the cases pending against him. EC will not check the veracity of the details mentioned there. If anyone has objections to the claim, they can take it to other forums like courts. Based on the grounds, we accepted the nomination of the candidate," Manoharan told TOI.

Yet, the final list of candidates in the fray will be out on January 30.
