RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh Congress chief Charandas Mahant has said that chief minister Raman Singhshould consider opting out of contest from Rajnandgaon, where wife of a slain Congress leader, who was killed in the May 25 Maoist attack, is in the fray.

"I think Raman Singh should not contest against Alka Mudliyar, wife of the 'martyr' who sacrificed his life in Bastar," he told reporters here on his return from New Delhi on Sunday evening.

Mahant's statement had triggered speculation in state's political circles about the possibility of Raman Singh preferring some other constituency to take a high ground that he is sympathetic towards the families of those killed in the Bastar attack.

Maoists had ambushed a Congress convoy in Bastar on May 25 eliminating frontline leaders of the Congress, including Uday Mudliyar, a former MLA from Rajnandgaon. Congress has fielded his wife Alka Mudliyar to contest against the chief minister. On the other hand, chief minister on Saturday had indicated that he would contest for the Rajnandgaon seat.

Replying to a question, Mahant indicated that the party might deny tickets to some of the sitting legislators.
