With high stakes in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh polls, the BJP plans to play the caste combinations cautiously. The party is unlikely to declare a chief ministerial candidate, but it will field four or five leaders from various communities to lead the campaign in the politically crucial state.

Dinesh Sharma and Mahesh Sharma will be its Brahmin faces. Dinesh Sharma, who was keen on becoming party chief, was offered a Rajya Sabha seat but he refused, said a source. Shiv Pratap Shukla’s nomination to the Upper House could please the Brahmins, the source added.

The BJP is also expected to promote Union ministers Sanjeev Balyan (Jat), Manoj Sinha (Bhumihar), Ram Shankar Katheria (BJP’s Dalit face in the state) and Anupriya Patel (of Kurmi-dominated Apna Dal, a BJP ally).

Varun Gandhi’s name is doing the rounds, too.
“He is a known face and has support among youth. But he does not have a good equation with the PM, nor does he have a good rapport with the Sangh and senior BJP leaders. The Sangh will watch him now,” a source said. The party will also focus on non-Yadav OBC communities like Lodhis and Kurmis, sources said.
“The BJP will highlight ‘sabka saath sabka vikas’. Our support base is upper castes, but we have to build other communities too. To appeal to Dalits and Yadavs, we will expose the SP and BSP’s failure in reaching benefits to them. Among Dalits, Valmikis favour us,” said a party leader, adding that upper castes and non-Yadav OBCs would get priority in ticket distribution. The BJP state chief, Keshav Prasad Maurya, is a Dalit.
