Muzaffarnagar: The FIR filed by the police against those involved in instigating communal violence in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh has named three political leaders. Muzafarnagar's District Magistrate Kushal Raj Sharma said that 35 arrests have been made so far in the communal clashes that have taken place in the city area. "FIR has been filed against 3-4 senior leaders and other party workers who were involved," Sharma said. The death toll in the communal clashes has gone up to 26 so far.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav held an emergency meeting with top bureaucrats and party leaders to take cation against the ongoing violence in the district. Curfew has been clamped in the riot-hit areas. Meanwhile the political circuit has opened up its opposition against the law and order situation in the state. Congress General Secreatary Digvijay Singh blamed the state government for the violence in the state. "Track record of the Samjawadi party in the present tenure as far as controlling the communal riots is concerned has been very poor.
When we compare this with the previous Bahujan Samaj Party government, at least it was better on this aspect," he said. Muzaffarnagar has been the forth major communal flash point in Uttar Pradesh from the time the Samajwadi Party government has been elected. Faizabad, Bareilly and Ghaziabad have also been under the fire of communal violence which has resulted in the loss of innocent lives. Adding to that about half a dozen minor clashes have also been reported from the state during the same period. Intelligence agencies have been reporting a possibility of rise in communal tension in some states. In a meeting called by the Cabinet Secretary recently, the Centre told the chief secretaries of seven states including Uttar Pradesh that attempts were being made to create a situation of communal tension in the run up to the 2014 general elections.
The states were advised to keep a check on local criminal elements and work towards a better Centre-State coordination in intelligence sharing. In the wake of the violence, the BSP has demanded resignation from the present government. "The SP government should resign on moral grounds. Otherwise, the BSP will appeal to the Centre to impose President's rule in Uttar Pradesh," BSP leader Swamy Prasad Maurya said. Rashtriya Lok Dal has also echoed the same demand of the need to impose President's rule in the state. "Situation is out of control, people feeling unsafe in the state. They had interest in letting communal tension go. There is a complete breakdown of law and order.
That is why we are demanding President rule in the state," said General Secretary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Jayant Chaudhary. There are also voices from the Opposition accusing the BJP and the SP of joining hands before the general elections, with the VHP yatra in Ayodhya in August being seen as a part of the political design. The SP, however, blamed the communal forces for the flare-up in the state. There are some forces that do not want peace and are pro-communal clashes. We will take strict action against them. Our government will respond strongly to this. I appeal to the people to stand against communal violence and not allow things like this to happen," UP Cabinet Minister Shivpal Yadav said.
UP Home Secretary Kamal Saxena earlier in the day warned that fake videos about communal clashes are being circulated through social media to disturb the communal harmony in the state which should not be believed. Saxena also said that the clashes could not be controlled as it had spread to interior areas of the district. With 80 seats in the Lok Sabha, UP assumes importance for all political stake holders at the Centre and any polarisation on religious grounds is likely to have an impact on the electoral outcome.
