Mohammed Chaman, a short, soft-spoken merchant of election merchandise in Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar, is miffed at the way the general elections are going for him.

“I have not sold anything since morning; I don’t know who will eventually win or lose, but I am certainly a loser. My business is down by half this time,” says Chaman, sitting in his shop overflowing with stacks of scarves, caps, t-shirts, bands, watches featuring slogans and symbols of various political parties.

“This smartphone has killed my business,” he says, pulling out a phone from his pocket. “Earlier, the contestants had merchandise rooms at their offices, now they have war rooms where tech-savvy youngsters run their campaign on laptops. They do not seem to need us anymore.”

Chaman is not the only one whose business has taken a nosedive — traders and manufacturers in Sadar Bazaar, which has been supplying election merchandise to political parties and candidates all over the country for decades, say they have not seen a slump like this before. And they blame it on the mobile internet.

The trend of online campaigning, which started during the 2014 general elections, they say, has reached a crescendo in 2019, with contestants relying more on digital platforms to reach out to their voters than the traditional methods like public speeches, road shows, door- to- door campaigns, killing their decades-old business.

They are not exaggerating — India now has 450 million smartphones owners against 155 million during the previous general elections in 2014, according to Counterpoint Research. And experts say the online advertising expenditure by political parties is likely to double to 400 to 500 crore this Lok Sabha election.

Political consultants say their clients have realised that election merchandise is out of fashion and a sheer waste of time and money. “They can get 1,000 likes for a few hundred rupees on Facebook, imagine how much time and money it would take to personally reach out to 1,000 households,” says Vivek Bagri, who runs Leadtech, a political consultancy firm in Gurgaon. “Besides, digital campaigning has a lot of room for creativity in terms of design and messaging. Since 2014, our business has gone up ten times. We are working in almost every state for political parties and candidates during the current elections.”

But Bagri admits that digital campaigning has led to what he calls an ‘emotional detachment’ between the candidate and their constituents. “A bond is developed when a politician goes to personally meet his or her voters,” says Bagri.

According to an estimate by the industry body Assocham, there were around 150 ‘political consultants’, big and small, in 2014. Industry insiders peg their current number at 400, and their stated ‘expertise’ lies in helping political parties and candidates meet technological and social media challenges.

Lok Sabha elections 2019: RLD, SP talks before General Elections

Lok Sabha elections 2019: RLD, SP talks before General Elections

Lok Sabha elections 2019: Uttar Pradesh has 80 Lok Sabha seats, the highest for any state.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Jayant Chaudhary met Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday, though both sides refused to share the details of the discussions.

Chaudhary approached the SP headquarters and met Akhilesh, both spoke for an hour, a senior SP leader said. Chaudhry later said, "We discussed present politics and future course of action and also about BJP's failures".

On reports suggesting that Akhilesh might be quizzed by the CBI in the mining scam, Chaudhary extended his support to Akhilesh and said, "Institutions are being abused (by the BJP government) and everyone is watching. I told Akhilesh, our party is with him."

He said that his party would get in the proposed SP-BSP alliance on the number of seats.

He avoided questions on the possibility of inclusion of the Congress in the alliance for the Lok Sabha polls.

Although no official word came from the SP and the BSP yet, the sources claimed that two political organizations in Uttar Pradesh would contest the 37 Lok Sabha seats. Uttar Pradesh has 80 Lok Sabha seats, which is the highest for any state.

On reservation of 10 per cent to economically backward sections in general category, Chaudhary said, "The BJP did not follow any of its announcements or promises."

Elections 2019: Modi Government benefited from upper castes with 10% reservation

Elections 2019: Modi Government benefited from upper castes with 10% reservation

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government has decided to grant 10% reservation to economically weaker sections, especially upper castes that are the main voter of the party. The decision has been taken to monitor the Lok Sabha elections 2019.

Although the final references to the reservation have not yet been made public, but the people have been informed of the developments, "Beneficiaries of the weaker section have less than 8 lakhs of annual income, less than 5 hectares of agricultural land, residential property of less than 1,000 square feet and a residential plot which is less than 109 square yards in a notified municipality and 209 square yards in the non-notified municipality. "

This decision is an attempt to address the concerns of the ongoing upper castes who are angry with their recent step of restoring the provisions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

“My compliments to PM and his cabinet for giving approval to 10% reservation in jobs & higher education to economically backward persons in the general category. This shall provide much-needed push to the aspirations of this class of people,” Himanta Biswa Sarma, senior BJP leader and minister in the Assam government, tweeted on Monday.

Senior BJP leaders argue that the objective of the decision is to broaden the social justice net to enable more people from different backgrounds to benefit from government jobs and education.

“We have received several reports and feedback that people, especially youth, felt that they were not part of the social justice net of the government. The idea to allow reservations for economically weaker sections would allow different communities, who are otherwise facing financial trouble, to benefit,” said a senior BJP leader aware of the development.

BJP leaders also point out that in the last four years of the ruling at the centre, different communities have led agitations demanding reservations, including Jats in Haryana, Patels in Gujarat, and Marathas in Maharashtra. All three states are ruled by the BJP and their governments had to face the ire of these communities.

“This decision should address the demands of Patels, Marathas and Jats in a way. There is a genuine concern among members of the upper caste who are not financially stable, the government is duty-bound to address the concerns of the upper castes,” the BJP leader added.

BJP leaders explained that there was a growing sentiment within the upper castes that the BJP government was only working for socially weaker sections to win elections and that the party was not protecting the rights of the communities that helped it win the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

“We were being seen as a party which was trying to change its social base by forgetting about the demands of its core voters. This decision would neutralize the sentiment that the BJP no longer cares for its core constituency. It is difficult to ascertain whether this decision would benefit the party in the long run,” said a senior BJP leader from Lucknow said.

A prominent Dalit thinker and writer questioned on the ethical basis of the decision.

AAP appoint lakhs of booth-level in-charges for general polls

Lok Sabha elections 2019 | AAP appoint lakhs of booth-level in-charges for general polls

Party leader Gopal Rai said that AAP will appoint lakhs of booth-level officials for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2019 and announce the list of candidates within February 15.

He said that any coalition will be decided in the country according to the emerging political situation, saying that the party will fight in all the 33 seats of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Goa and Chandigarh.

Rai indicated that the party has kept its options open on the possibility of a coalition with opposition parties including Congress and said, "There is a fluctuation in the situation in the country. We will analyze it and decide later."

He said that the party was ready to make adjustments with the Opposition parties for the removal of Modi government's "Hitler-Shahi".

However, Rai clarified that the AAP has started preparing for elections by focusing on Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Goa and Chandigarh.

Inspired by the BJP's 'Panna Prabhari', who have direct connections with the voters in the booth, AAP will appoint 3.62 lakh ' Vijay Pramukh ' in Delhi and 4.62 lakh people in Haryana.

Rai said, "Each Vijay Pramukh will cover ten houses in a polling booth and will be responsible for providing voting slips to the voters and bring them to the polling booths on the day of polling. They will participate in one week's election campaign before the polling begins.

The 'Vijay Pramukhs' will be enlisted from volunteers who have participated in the party's door-to-door election campaign for the elections. They will also distribute a questionnaire to voters seeking views on the AAP government in Delhi and Arvind Kejriwal's performance as a chief minister.

Kejriwal will be the nerve centre of the party's campaign. He will hold rallies in different states, besides holding meetings with workers. Kejriwal will address three rallies in Punjab and one in Haryana in the next few weeks. He will hold a meeting with block-level party workers from Punjab on Thursday.

In the run-up to the elections, Kejriwal will address rallies at Sangrur on January 20, Anandpur Sahib on January 28, Amritsar on February 2 and Charkhi Dadri on January 4.

He will also launch the party's door to door campaign in Haryana by holding meetings with office bearers of Lok Sabha seats in the state. The office bearers will conduct the campaign in each Parliamentary constituency.

In Delhi, Kejriwal will hold meetings with campaigners of the door to door programme conducted so far in different constituencies. The first such meeting with volunteers of South Delhi will be held on January 10.

Rai said he "hoped" that Parliamentary in-charges in Delhi will be ultimately announced as official AAP candidates for the Lok Sabha polls. So far, in-charges in six constituencies in Delhi have been announced and one for the West Delhi seat is likely to be named soon.

On Wednesday Dutt's lawyer Subhash Jadhav informed the special Tada court that the 53-year-old actor wanted to withdraw his application filed a day before seeking leave to surrender before Yerwada jail in Pune instead of giving himself up in the TADA court here.

He did not assign any reason for withdrawing the application.
