New Delhi: Congress on Thursday ridiculed as "political anticipatory bail application" BJP leader Arun Jaitley's letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh alleging that the government was misusing investigating agencies like CBI, IB and NIA to settle scores with BJP and Narendra Modi.

"Do agree with a Twitter friend that Mr Jaitley's complain of CBI to PM and not CJI is actually a Political Anticipatory Bail Application," party general secretary Shakeel Ahmed tweeted.

"Is Mr Jaitley's letter to PM and not CJI on CBI's misuse is an eyewash? It is known that cases against Modi & Amit Shah are monitored by courts," he posted.

In his 15-page letter, the Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha said Congress is targeting Modi and his former home minister Amit Shah for the past few years.

"The Congress strategy in the face of its depleting popularity is clear. Congress cannot fight the BJP and Narendra Modi politically. Defeat stares them in the face. By misuse of investigative agencies they have so far tried various methods of falsely implicating Modi and his former Home Minister Amit Shah," Jaitley wrote.

Rejecting the contentions, Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal said Jaitley was "scared" and hence he was writing such letters as he could foresee his own party men facing the music.

"They (BJP) have seen that despite being a Congress MP Rasheed Masood was convicted and so was RJD chief Lalu Prasad, an old ally of UPA. This takes away from us the charge that we had been misusing CBI," he said.

"They are now panicked over CBI functioning independently that their own people like Amit Shah, who are already under CBI's scanner may meet the same fate and face conviction," he said.

Afzal advised Jaitely that instead of writing a 15-page letter to the Prime Minister, he being a good lawyer should argue on these points in court and defend his party leaders.
