Modi one of the best administrators, I strongly back him, says Goa CM.

New Delhi:

Narendra Modi

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has refuted reports saying that he is opposed to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the Bharatiya Janata Party's Prime Ministerial candidate. Claiming that he has been misquoted, Parrikar said that he completely backs Modi as the PM candidate. "Media quoted me irresponsibly, picking up words they wanted to. We strongly support Modi and he is a good administrator. I strongly advocated for Modi in that interview. It's manipulation," Parrikar said.

Parrikar was quoted as saying that the 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat were a "blot" on Narendra Modi's career though he was not personally part of it. "There were many reasons why people lost control in 2002 after the dead bodies (of Hindu pilgrims from an earlier attack) were shown on TV. It should not have happened.

The administration should have clamped down on any violence, (if I were in his place) I would have ensured. But Modi was new to the job as chief minister. It was a blot on Modi's career, but he was not personally a part of it. If he is guilty by connivance he should be punished. But investigations have given him a clean chit. People who oppose him do so because they fear him," Parrika had reportedly told a freelance journalist whose interview has been carried by New York Times.

The Chief minister, known for making frank comments, had reportedly said the Gujarat violence "does not require his apology" but "correction" and he has done that. However, speaking to CNN-IBN, Parrikar said that Modi is one of the best administrators. "I have already said that there were some administrative failures. For the last many years, Modi has been an excellent administrator," Parrikar said. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has conveyed to the BJP high command that Modi should not be projected as the party's prime ministerial candidate before Assembly polls, said sources on Friday.

The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has conveyed the message to party President Rajnath Singh and senior party leader LK Advani last week. The remarks came even as the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh top brass is set to meet top BJP leaders next week to discuss Modi' elevation. However, Chouhan's office is denying the statement saying that he has never written to anyone or opposed Modi. On Thursday, Modi had denied harbouring prime ministerial aspirations and said he had no intentions of becoming anything, but he just wants to serve the people of Gujarat. He has said his priority is to serve the people of Gujarat till 2017 as he has been voted in by the state electorate. These statements by Modi come at a time when the BJP seems to be divided on making him the Prime Ministerial candidate.

Top RSS leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi met senior BJP leader LK Advani and some other top leaders on Sunday night to discuss the issue. While Modi supporters have been pushing for his announcement as the prime ministerial candidate, the Advani camp insists this will polarise the polity at a time when the UPA is grappling with corruption, economic crisis and non-performance.
