Union minister Babul Supriyo apparently suspects political motive behind the state government's decision to leave out Asansol and Siliguri from the Centre's Smart City scheme.

"Siliguri is the gateway to the Northeast. It as well as Asansol should have been included in the list of smart cities," said Babul, while he announced the list of BJP candidates for the Asansol municipal elections slated for October 3 at the party's state headquarters in central Kolkata on Wednesday. The list was released on a day when top party leaders congregated at a luxury resort at Raichak, about 50km from Kolkata, for a two-day chintan shivir, where national leaders, such as party general-secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, in charge of Bengal, and top state leaders, will chalk out the 2016 assembly polls strategy.

Union Minister Babul Supriyo Wednesday said he will will write to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requesting her to ask for more central forces to ensure “free and fair” elections to the newly formed municipal corporations of Asansol and Bidhannagar.

The two corporations go to polls on October 3. “It is unfortunate to see that the West Bengal Police has been working as an extension of the ruling Trinamool Congress. But since the state government would have to write to the central government for forces, I would request the chief minister to do so at the earliest,” the Union Minister of State for Urban Development said.

“We have seen the last municipal polls and seen the way polling took place. The state police has failed to ensure free and fair polls as they act on the orders of the state administration and ruling party. So only the central forces can ensure proper polls in the corporation elections,” Supriyo said, adding if elections were held in a fair and free fashion, the BJP would come out with flying colours.

The Asansol MP also announced the list of BJP candidates. The party will contest all the 106 seats and named candidates for all, barring that for ward No. 58 that would be declared soon.

The West Bengal State Election Commission issued the notification for polling at the AMC, Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation and the Bally municipality that had been merged with the Howrah Municipal Corporation. The polls will be held on October 3.

Asked about the open discontent against the party leadership regarding candidate selection during the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) elections, the singer-turned-politician said that although the current list has been prepared unanimously, but “sparks of complaint may fly later.”
