SRINAGAR: The ruling coalition partners in Jammu and Kashmir -- the National Conference (NC) and Congress -- will not be forging any pre-poll alliance for the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the state and would contest against each other.

The NC’s powerful Central Working Committee (CWC) members met here on June 18 to discuss the strategy for the Assembly polls, scheduled to be held later this year.

“The meeting unanimously decided that there will not be any pre-poll alliance with any party, including its ally the Congress for Assembly polls. The party will be contesting in elections on its own and will not forge alliance with any party,” said a senior NC leader, who attended the CWC meeting.

State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s uncle and NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamal said his party had not contested any Assembly polls so far in alliance with any party. “We have contested Assembly elections independently and the same will be the case this time too,” he said.

The formal announcement on the NC on not having any pre-poll alliance for Assembly polls with the Congress would be made by  party president Farooq Abdullah in the coming days.

Kamal said the NC had not contested the previous Assembly elections in alliance with the Congress, but had joined hands with the party to form government in the state. The NC-Congress coalition Government, according to him, would complete its full-term of six years this year.
