There is a new low in the ties between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (United) as the two parties have taken on each other over the Sabarmati tragedy in Godhra in 2002.

BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi on Monday pointed out that it was Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who was the rail minister during the Sabarmati tragedy of 2002.

"There is no one in the BJP who is not secular. Even in 2002 Nitish Kumar was part of the NDA. During the Sabarmati tragedy, he was the Railway Minister," Lekhi had said.

Nitish, in response to that, has clarified that he had replied in Parlaiment in his capacity as the Rail Minister. But he added that the onus did not lie on him as law and order remained a state subject.

"I had replied in my capacity as the Rail Minister on the very next day. As the Rail minister I was responsible for safety, derailment and accidents. When it is a matter of law and order, then it is the responsibility of the state government," Nitish said.

On Sunday, Nitish had raised the pitch against the BJP projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a Prime Ministerial candidate.

Nitish Kumar did not name the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, but made it very clear he is not acceptable as a PM candidate. Nitish listed the criteria for a prime minister and said only someone who can take all sections of society together can take the top post.
