Jammu, March 2: Two candidates each of ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP and opposition National Conference (NC) were elected to Legislative Council on Monday.

Elections for two seats of Kashmir under first notification and four seats of Jammu under second notification were conducted at the Central Hall of Legislative Assembly complex, here today.
The Returning Officer for the J&K Legislative Council Elections, M. Ramzan declared six candidates including Charanjeet Singh (BJP), Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo (NC), Surinder Kumar Choudhary (PDP), Vibod Gupta (BJP), Javaid Ahmad (PDP) and Qaiser Jamshed Lone (NC) elected to the six LC seats.
Elections were held for the seats that would fall vacant in the Upper House after six members would retire on March 9 and March 16,” he said.
Interestingly, NC managed victory on both the seats one in Jammu and second in Kashmir with support of Congress despite BJP-PDP combine having more legislators. BJP candidate Romesh Arora had withdrawn his candidature, thus leaving seven candidates in fray for six LC seats.
Javaid Ahmed of PDP won by securing 30 votes, Qaiser Jamshed won by securing 30 votes. However, PDP candidate Saifullah was defeated on Kashmir’s seat. He got 29 votes.

For four LC seats in Jammu, there was stiff fight among the candidates. NC-Congress combine candidate Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo won by securing 29 votes.

Two BJP candidates Charanjeet Singh and Vibodh Gupta won by securing 18 and 19 votes respectively. The PDP candidate Surinder Choudhary belonging to Nowshera also won by securing 21 votes.

Earlier, five candidates — three from PDP and two from BJP — were elected unopposed to five seats of LC. They include PDP’s Firdous Tak, Yasir Rishi and Inayat Ali and BJP’s Sofi Yousaf and Shering Dorgey.
