Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who is being projected by a section within the BJP as the party's prime ministerial candidate for the next Lok Sabha polls, on Tuesday met a host of top leaders including Atal Behari Vajpayee and LK Advani.

Here to attend the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting, Modi utilised the opportunity to spend the entire day with the top leaders whose support he would require at the time the party decides on its Prime Ministerial candidate.

Today's meetings assume significance as Modi is reportedly pushing the party hard to declare him as BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate ahead of the general elections.

Modi has asked top party leaders to "effectively use the failures of the UPA government" and also project the successes of the BJP-led governments in various states and achievements during the previous NDA regime, party sources said.

He also called for making optimum use of media, including social media, to put forth the party's views before the public in an aggressive way, they said.

This was the first time that Modi attended the BJP Parliamentary Board, the top decision-making body of the party, after he was nominated as its member by party president Rajnath Singh recently.

Modi met former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at his residence and sought his blessings. Vajpayee is indisposed for sometime now.

Soon after his arrival in Delhi, the Gujarat Chief Minister headed straight to Advani's residence and spent some 40 minutes with him and later termed the meeting as "wonderful".

"In Delhi today. Had a wonderful meeting with Advaniji on arrival at Delhi," Modi said on Twitter after meeting Advani.

He then headed towards former BJP President Nitin Gadkari's residence and spent about an hour with him. Gadkari is considered close to the RSS and his support is crucial to Modi.

While these meetings were scheduled before BJP Parliamentary Board meetings, he met party president Rajnath Singh soon after the meeting and had lunch with him.

The Gujarat Chief Minister also spent almost two hours with BJP's General Secretary (Organisation) Ram Lal, who is also considered close to the RSS.

Modi discussed internal party affairs with Ram Lal, as also the party's strategy for the forthcoming 'Jail bharo' agitation from May 27 to June 2 against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the coal block issue, the sources said.

National News Update: Uma Bharti may contest Lok Sabha polls from Uttar Pradesh's Amroha

Bhopal:

BJP Vice-President Uma Bharti, a sitting MLA from Uttar Pradesh, is likely to contest the next Lok Sabha election from Amroha in the neighbouring state.

"The BJP is seriously considering fielding Bharti, a prominent face of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, from Amroha seat in Uttar Pradesh," sources close to her said on Friday.

The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister forayed into Uttar Pradesh poll politics in 2012 and was elected from Charkhari Assembly constituency. Charkhari is part of Bundelkhand, a backward region spread over both the states.

Party President Rajnath Singh, who inducted Bharti in his new team announced in March, has already taken her consent for Amroha in north-west Uttar Pradesh. Aligarh, too, is on the radar of the BJP leadership for her, they said.

Uma Bharti may contest Lok Sabha polls from Amroha

Bharti forayed into UP poll politics in 2012 and was elected from Charkhari Assembly constituency.

The sources denied reports that the 53-year-old firebrand leader may contest the Lok Sabha polls from Bhopal, a seat which she won in 1999. The party wants to utilise her services in Uttar Pradesh, a state having the maximum (80) Lok Sabha seats and which also gave birth to the Ram temple movement, to cash in on her image as a top Hindutva leader, they said.

The BJP had deputed her in Uttar Pradesh as star campaigner for the 2012 Assembly polls after her return to the party fold in 2011 and was tasked with reviving the saffron outfit in the crucial northern state. However, there was no significant turnround in BJP's fortunes in UP and the party came a distant third after SP and Mayawati-led BSP.

Bharti, who was a minister in the Vajpayee Government, left BJP in 2005 and floated her own outfit Bhartiya Janshakti Party. She returned to BJP two years ago. Though she lost her first Parliamentary election in 1984, Bharti never looked back and won the Lok Sabha polls from Khajuraho in 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998.

The study conducted by IRIS Knowledge Foundation and Internet and Mobile Association of India said, "There are 160 high impact constituencies out of the total of 543 constituencies, which are likely be influenced by social media during the next general elections."

India has about 62 million social media users and the numbers are continually increasing.

The study categorises high impact constituencies as those where "Facebook users account for over 10 per cent of total voters in a constituency."

Maharashtra has the maximum high impact constituencies (21) followed closely by Gujarat (17).

Uttar Pradesh comes third with 14 high impact constituencies followed by Karnataka (12), Tamil Nadu (12), Andhra Pradesh (11) and Kerala (10).

Madhya Pradesh scores low with nine and the nation capital has seven such constituencies.

While Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan settle with five high impact constituencies, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir settle with four high impact constituencies, the lowest.

However, the study pointed out, "It is not the number of likes and tweets that are going to determine the probability of winning of a certain candidate but the ability of a candidate to engage with the electorate, by rising above the media clutter, and by trying to get his or her message across to the voter directly."

The study based its findings on the changing scenario over the years with greater online activities in debates, discussion and initialisation of protests digitally.

The report also stated that a total of 67 constituencies fall within the medium impact constituencies, meaning those where "a Facebook user can influence one other voter who may not be on Facebook."

There are 60 low impact constituencies and the rest 256 are tagged under "no impact constituencies."

BJP Leader fears about 2014 Lok Sabha election, BJP fears minority voters may go with Congress , National News Update, National latest news.

New Delhi:

BJP leader Arun Jaitley fears that the polarisation of minority community votes can create problems during the Lok Sabha elections for the party. Jaitley expressed the apprehension at a party meeting and the move is seen as a hurdle in projecting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate even though the party is claiming that all its leaders are united.

At the meeting on Sunday Jaitley said that if in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections votes of the minority community had gone to regional parties and not the Congress, then the BJP would have gained a lot of seats. The BJP does not want to give any chance to the Congress to tap the minority votes in the next Lok Sabha elections even though its leaders are not talking openly about it. BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said that the entire party was united and the only issue was development.

Even though BJP is not openly admitting, but the party fears about minority votes. A section of the party is already worried about the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance breaking up and if such a situation arises then the Congress will get very potent weapon to target the BJP.

BSP supremo Mayawati voiced her prime ministerial ambitions,Mayawati voices PM ambitions,She's ensure a "big victory" for Lok Sabha elections 2014, National news .

Nagpur:17 Feb 2013

BSP supremo Mayawati on Sunday voiced her prime ministerial ambitions by asking party workers to ensure a "big victory" for it in the next Lok Sabha elections so that she can deliver the Independence Day speech from the Red Fort.

Trying to position herself for a national role, Mayawati also cautioned her party cadre against becoming a "saleable commodity"

"You must ensure a big victory for BSP in the next general elections so that I can deliver Independence Day speech as Prime Minister from the Red Fort," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said addressing a state-level rally of party workers in Nagpur. The Prime Minister traditionally delivers the Independence Day speech from the ramparts of Red Fort.

The BSP mainly has a presence in UP which accounts for 80 Lok Sabha seats, roughly 15 per cent of the total seats at stake.

The BSP mainly has a presence in UP which accounts for 80 Lok Sabha seats, roughly 15 per cent of the total seats at stake.

Mayawati, currently a Rajya Sabha MP, said her party workers should remain alert against forces that might "try to corrupt them" during the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. "Don't become a saleable commodity," she warned.

She also demanded stringent punishment to those involved in the VVIP helicopter scam. She accused Congress and BJP of conspiring to stall the bill on quota in promotion for SCs/STs in government jobs and promised that if her party comes to power at the Centre, it would ensure that it is implemented.

Congress-led UPA government could also have filed a review petition in the Supreme Court, which had quashed UP government's decision on reservation in promotions for SC/STs, but it did not, Mayawati alleged.

Congress also had the option of asking a competent legal counsel to defend the case of continuing the reservation quota in promotions, but it did not do so, she said.

Both Congress and the BJP conspired to deny the rights to lakhs of government employees, she alleged and asked the cadre to remain equidistant from both the parties.

BSP had to take the fight to streets and finally to Parliament, she said, adding "though we have succeeded partially as the Rajya Sabha has passed the Amendment Bill, but it is still pending in the Lok Sabha." Opposing the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retail, Mayawati said the UPA government should adopt developmental policies which would benefit the general public.

She also criticised the direct cash transfer in subsidy schemes saying it would not help the poor. She supported creation of Telangana state and favoured statehood to Vidarbha.

BJP president Rajnath Singh will contest the 2014 general elections from Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat, Rajnath Singh will contest again From Gaziabad.

GHAZIABAD:7 Feb 2013

Quelling speculations over its choice of candidate for the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat, the BJP in a meeting on Wednesday clarified that party president and sitting MP Rajnath Singh will contest the 2014 general elections from the constituency. The announcement has been made in the light of recent conjectures by rival political parties - particularly after Singh was elevated to the post of party president - that BJP would field a fresh candidate from Ghaziabad.

Singh, a former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, had been elected to the Lok Sabha from Ghaziabad in the 2009 general elections after defeating his nearest rival, the Congress candidate Surendra Prakash Goel, by a margin of over 90,000 votes.

The BJP unit in Ghaziabad informed that ever since Singh was elected national president in January, rival political parties had launched systematic campaigns against him, fabricating theories that he would no longer contest from Ghaziabad.

"These rumours have been floated to wean away his vote base from the region. Opponents have developed cold feet over the prospect of Singh playing a major role at the centre if BJP forms the government after the general elections," said SP Singh, BJP (Mahanagar), Ghaziabad. "That's why Singh's name has been sealed for Ghaziabad well ahead of formally declaring the list for Uttar Pradesh," he added.

The BJP said chances of Singh moving out from Ghaziabad are even more remote because the party is looking ahead to increase its tally in western UP, including re-gaining the parliamentary seat of Gautam Budh Nagar, which had remained in the party's kitty continuously from 1991 to 2009. In 2009, BSP candidate Surendra Nagar had trounced BJP's Dr Mahesh Sharma to win the Gautam Budh Nagar seat.

Though BJP functionaries remained tight-lipped about the choice of their candidate for Gautam Budh Nagar, party sources informed that Rajnath's son, Pankaj Singh, is being considered to make his electoral debut from this seat.

As per sources, Pankaj Singh might be fielded in Gautam Buddh Nagar to consolidate on the overwhelming Thakur vote bank in the constituency.

"Besides, the party is also trying to cash in on the youth appeal of Pankaj Singh in Noida and Greater Noida," said a senior BJP member.
