Delhi gets 2,724 crore for healthcare and Rs 260 crore for power subsidy in Budget
For healthcare
An increase in the number of hospital beds, a new medical college, a multi-speciality health unit, more ambulances and dialysis units are among the highlights for the health sector in the Delhi Budget announced for 2014-15. “Hospital projects for Rs.940 crore are currently under execution which would provide over 1,400 additional beds and through concerted efforts, over 900 doctors and 1,100 nurses have been recruited for various health facilities in the past few months,” noted the Budget.
“The most welcome feature is the fact that the Government has listed out that over 10 lakh OPD patients and 32,000 in-patient department from economically weaker sections were provided free medical care in private hospitals of Delhi during the past one year. Now to help them further an online facility has been launched to book beds for eligible poor patients in such hospitals. This not only brings in transparency but also accountability among the private healthcare providers and the government.”
For power subsidy
Proposing no new taxes in the Budget for Delhi, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on Friday announced subsidy of Rs 0.80 to Rs 1.20 per unit to small power consumers as also a slew of measures like low floor buses, sanitation and multi-speciality hospital in Rohini. The Rs 36,776 crore budget for Delhi was presented in Parliament as the state is currently under the President's rule. Proposing the Budget for 2014-15, Jaitley said no new tax has been proposed in Delhi and added that more night shelters would be set up in the National Capital Territory area. A multi-speciality hospital will come up in Rohini and 50 dialysis centres in the different parts of NCT. Also four new sewage treatment plants have been planned for Delhi.
The government has earmarked Rs 260 crore for power subsidy. Following protest by Congress and opposition members over the Budget proposals, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said issues could be raised during the debate on it. Jaitley later said he was only proposing the Budget, which would be passed after discussion.
