Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay meets city MPs whether party should form government

BJPDelhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay today held discussions with the party's all city MPs to elicit their views on whether the party should try to form a government or go for fresh elections in the national capital which is under President's rule.

Upadhyay said that "in the meeting with all seven MPs, I sought their views on several issues, including government-formation in Delhi."  BJP had won 31 seats in the 70-member Delhi assembly in the polls in December last year but its number came down to 28 after three of its legislators Harsh Vardhan, Ramesh Bidhuri and Pervesh Verma were elected to Lok Sabha.

Even with 31 MLAs, BJP had in December refused to form a government for failing to secure simple majority. Later, Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, which had emerged as the second largest party in the elections with 28 seats, formed a government with Congress support from outside.

President's rule was imposed in Delhi on February 17 after Kejriwal resigned as Chief Minister.  Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung is likely to send a report to the Centre in a month or two on the political situation. The Union Cabinet is likely to take a decision on whether to extend President's rule by another six months or go for fresh polls.

Upadhyay also said he sought their views also on issues like electricity and water crises and law and order in the national capital. "All MPs also put forth their suggestions on how to strengthen the party in Delhi. It was also decided that they would gather at the party office to discuss people's issues every week." the BJP leader added.

He said a meeting of all BJP MLAs has been called tomorrow to also seek their views on the political situation besides several people's issues.  "We have to go through the proper process. After meeting with the MLAs, Delhi BJP unit will then ascertain the views of senior leadership on the political situations in Delhi," the BJP president added.
