London, (IANS) British Prime Minister David Cameron has formed his first all-Conservative cabinet after his party stormed to victory in this year's general election, Downing Street announced on Sunday.

The new cabinet saw most of Cameron's close allies retaining their jobs, including Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, Home Secretary Theresa May, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond and Defence Secretary Michael Fallon.

Osborne also became first secretary of state, an honorific title implying seniority over other ministers, Xinhua reported.

Michael Gove, the former government chief whip of the House of Commons, was appointed lord chancellor and secretary of state for justice, succeeding Chris Grayling, who was appointed lord president of the council and leader of the House of Commons.

Nicky Morgan remained as secretary of state for education and minister for women and equalities, while former immigration minister Mark Harper was made the new chief whip.

Tens of ministers and senior officials have resigned from the government, including former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg, whose Liberal Democrats party suffered disastrous defeat in the general election.

Other notable Liberal Democrat ministers stepping down from government include former chief secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander, former business secretary Vincent Cable, and former energy and climate change secretary Edward Davey.

The Conservative Party won 331 out of a total of 650 seats in the general election held on Thursday, securing the first Conservative majority in parliament since 1997.

Labour Party leader Ed Miliband, Liberal Demacrats leader Nick Clegg and UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage have all resigned following defeats in the general election.

London,  (IANS) British Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party was just one short of absolute majority in 650-member House of Commons, winning 325 seats in the general elections held on Thursday, media reported on Friday.

Ed Miliband's Labour Party has secured 228 seats, the Scottish National Party (SNP) 56, and the Democratic Unionist Party and the Liberal Democrats are tied at eight, BBC reported.

Cameron said the election result is "clearly a very strong result for the Conservative Party", and added the party has had "a very positive response to a very positive campaign".

He said the Conservatives published a manifesto squarely for working people, and he hopes to be able to implement it in full.

The SNP has made a near-clean sweep with 56 out of a total 59 seats -- recording its most successful general elections victory ever. Its previous best was in October 1974, when it won 11 seats. The party won six seats in 2010.

Labour suffered its worst defeat since 1987, losing 40 of its 41 seats in Scotland. Miliband apologised to MPs on losing their seats in the general elections, saying that it had been a "very disappointing and difficult night".

"This has clearly been a very disappointing and difficult night for the Labour Party, we haven't made the gains we wanted in England and Wales, and in Scotland we have seen a surge of nationalism overwhelm our party," he said after the results were declared in Morley and Outwood, where he lost to Conservative candidate Andrea Jenkyns by 422 votes.

The Liberal Democrats lost 46 of their 56 seats.

London,  (IANS/RAY) The number of Indian-origin members in the new House of Commons following the British general elections held on Thursday will remain at 10, unchanged from the previous house.

All sitting MPs were re-elected bar one. Paul Uppal of the Conservative party lost in Wolverhampton South West in the West Midlands of England. He was defeated by Rob Marris of the Labour party by a margin of 801 votes in a constituency with a large presence of Sikhs from India.

Uppal's loss, though, was compensated by victory for Rishi Sunak, a Conservative, in Richmond in Yorkshire. This first-time MP was fighting a seat vacated by William Hague, who until last year was Britain's foreign minister. Sunak is a son-in-law of N.R. Narayana Murthy, one of the founders of the Indian software giant Infosys.

Those who retained their seats are: Keith Vaz (Leicester East), who has been an MP from 1987; his sister Valerie Vaz (Walsall South); Virendra Sharma (Ealing Southall); Seema Malhotra (Feltham & Heston); Lisa Nandy (Wigan), who is half Indian-half English; Sajid Javid (Bromsgrove), who is half Indian-half Pakistani and was minister for culture, media and sport in the outgoing cabinet; Priti Patel (Witham), who was a junior minister; Alok Sharma (Reading West); and Shailesh Vara (Cambridgeshire North West), another junior minister who has been an MP since 2005.

“I fought a positive campaign, based on what I have achieved for the constituency and what the Conservatives have achieved in government,” Vara said.

"I am absolutely delighted. I have served them for 27 years and they have given me the huge privilege of an extension of another five," remarked Keith Vaz.

London, May 7 (IANS/RAY) Over 50 candidates of Indian origin are contesting in Thursday's British general election, the outcome of which should be known by Friday morning.

Those in the fray include Sajid Javid of the Conservative party, who is half Indian and has been a cabinet minister for culture, media and sport in the government now in office since 2010. He is standing from Bromsgrove.

Also fighting his old seat of Leicester East is Keith Vaz of the Labour party who is the seniormost of the Indian-origin MPs and has been a member of the House of Commons from 1987, not to mention his sister Valerie Vaz, also a Labour candidate.

Besides, junior ministers in the Conservative party-Liberal Democrat coalition led by Prime Minister David Cameron, Shailesh Vara (North West Cambridgeshire) and Priti Patel (Witham), both Conservatives, are also seeking re-election among 10 sitting MPs of Indian descent.

Among the incumbents, Paul Uppal, Conservative, is facing a tough challenge in his constituency of Wolverhampton South West.

The same is true of Alok Sharma, also Conservative, in Reading West; but he has a slightly better chance of pulling it off. It is not an easy ride for Valerie Vaz in Walsall South, either; but she has a fair chance of winning.

Other sitting candidates are expected to be returned comfortably.

Among the newcomers, Rishi Sunak, Conservative and son-in-law of Narayana Murthy, one of the founders of Infosys, is almost certain to triumph in Richmond, Yorkshire. He was selected to replace William Hague, until last year the British foreign minister who is retiring from the Commons.

Pramod Subbaraman, a Liberal Democrat, is a first time candidate in Edinburgh South, a seat held by his party. But the strong swing in favour of the Scottish National Party in Scotland has made it an uphill task for him.

Three others have an outside chance of crossing the line. They are Ms Purna Sen of Labour in Brighton Pavilion, Amanjit Jhund also of Labour in Dunbartonshire East and Douglas Hansen-Luke, Conservative, in Walsall North.

In a best case scenario there could be as many as 15 MPs in the next House of Commons. The likely result, though, could be 10-12 MPs.

Pakistani-origin MPs numbered seven in the outgoing house. This could increase to double figures in the next Commons.

The tally of Bangladeshi-origin MPs could treble. Sitting candidate Ms Rushanara Ali of Labour is strongly placed to prevail in Bethnal Green and Bow in east London. Ms Rupa Huq, also Labour, has an outside chance in Ealing Central and Acton in west London; while Ms Tulip Siddiq has an even better chance in Hampstead and Kilburn in north-west London.

Siddiq is a grand-daughter of Bangladesh's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a niece of the present Bangladeshi prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

Two candidates of Sri Lankan origin are worth keeping an eye on. Ranil Jayawardena, Conservative, is level pegging in Hampshire North East; while Uma Kumaran, a Sri Lankan Tamil of the Labour party, has an outside chance in Harrow East.

Ironically, Britain - the oldest democracy in the world - could see this community play a major role in deciding the next government.
