In order to vote in UK elections and referendums you need to be on the electoral register. The electoral register is a list of names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote in the UK.

How do I register to vote?

You can now register to vote online in England, Scotland and Wales – visitgov.uk/register-to-vote.

Registering online takes about 5 minutes.

Registering to vote in Northern Ireland?

If you want to register in Northern Ireland, visit the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland website.

Who can register to vote?

  • Anyone aged 16 or over (but you cannot vote until you are 18).
  • British or qualifying Commonwealth citizens. This means Commonwealth citizens who have leave to remain in the UK or do not require such leave.
  • Citizens of the Republic of Ireland or other European Union (EU) member states.

How do I change my name on the electoral register?

In England, Scotland and Wales you will need to complete a change of name form and provide proof of your change of name, such as a marriage or civil partnership certificate, an amended birth certificate, or deed poll.

When you move you need to re-register to your new address.
